Inspiration for Seniors who fear that downsizing means letting go of what you love and who you are

My New Bohemians came right n tme. This book is not just for creative singles, couples and families with kids. It's also inspirational for us seniors. With all the kids grown and gone We are downsizing from a wonderful funky old tumble down house to a smaller kinda sterile condo. Next week. The new bohemians came right on time to inspire me (and even spouse) to take "us" with us, to make the place our own with color and plants, textiles and textures...to take the old worn leather sofa whose every stain comes with a story, and to spark the sterile with DIY bling. Even old bohemians can be reignited by this new bohemians book. Blakeney is a genius, and Dabitos fotos are super inviting. Justina's descriptions are a joy to read, and easy Adopt an idea notions give all of us hope, at every stage of life.

OH MY GOODNESS...

This book takes me back to the 70s...when I was young and decorating my first apartment! It was a time of the "hippie" generation and I recall plenty of color, plants, wicker and casual comfort. I had very limited funds back then and this bohemian style was easy to achieve on a budget. It would still be a great way to decorate without breaking the bank. I have more money to spend on home decor these days, but I still love this look and have mixed it in with more pricey pieces...it really makes my house less serious and more fun for me and everyone that visits. This book is chock full of quirky, fun ideas that will lead open minded people to mix things up a little bit. This look is great if you love flea markets, auctions or estate sales. It also gives the collector plenty of ideas to creatively display their treasures. I can't recommend this book enough...this is one that I will display prominently on my coffee table and refer to often. So glad I purchased this...it was money well spent!

A beautiful inspiration board for creatives.

We recently bought a farmhouse in upstate NY so we needed inspiration for decorating it. After some Internet search I purchased about 4 great books on home decor, and this one (The New Bohemians) has become a favorite. Through the book I got to find Justina Blakeney's blog.
What I like about the book, which is a reflexion of Justina's personality, is that it has a self-confident and unique voice. This book is not only about houses and how they look, but about the people who live in them. That makes it special because houses are nothing without people. The New Bohemians is some sort of inspiration board for creatives. It's an invitation to be yourself and be fearless when it comes to making of your home an extension of who you truly are.

Here is a line from the Introduction that I enjoyed:

"It is my strong belief that wealth is not the key to having an amazing home and an incredible lifestyle - the key is inside you; it's your own creativity and being in an environment in which you're allowed to openly express it."

I want to add that the book itself is a beautiful object. It feels nice and heavy in your hands (it weights about 3 lb) and it is about 8 3/4 wide, 10 3/4 tall and a little bit over 1 inch thick. The photographs (by Dabito) are gorgeous, as well as the endpaper design (by Monica Ramos).

I recommend this book to the free-spirited type or person who appreciates beauty and creative expression. But I also recommended it to the uptight person who's a little bit afraid of expressing her/his own personality. You will feel inspired by the families featured by Justina.

Christopher Millard is Professor of Privacy and Information Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, University of London. He is also a Research Associate at the Oxford Internet Institute and is Of Counsel to the law firm Bristows. He has over 30 years experience in technology law, both in academia and legal practice, and has led the Cloud Legal Project at CCLS since it was established in 2009. He is a Fellow and former Chairman of the Society for Computers & Law and past-Chair of the Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association. He has published widely in the computer law field and is a founding editor of the International Journal of Law and Information Technology and of International Data Privacy Law (both Oxford University Press).

Having started out as a ‘computer lawyer’ in the 1980s, Professor Christopher Millard, who edits this important book on this very contemporary subject, refers to the legal and regulatory changes that have emerged in response to the advent of cloud computing.

‘Cloud Computing Law’, he says, ‘is worthy of attention as a specialist area of legal research, teaching and practice.’

Heading a team of seven expert contributors, Millard had brought at least three decades of experience and research to the compilation of this book. To cite only one example out of his dizzying list of credentials, he was asked by Microsoft in 2008 to lead a research project -- together with colleagues -- to assess the legal and regulatory implications of cloud computing.

This book synthesizes the numerous and detailed results of the subsequent Cloud Legal Project launched in 2009 which has in turn led to further research as new developments and issues have emerged in cloud computing technology.

Newly released by the Oxford University Press, the book examines, (in Millard’s words) ‘various key legal constructs and rules which apply to cloud computing, both in theory and practice’ -- with the additional objective of furthering the debate on how the governance of cloud computing may be improved.

Part I of the book explains what cloud computing actually is: in other words, it is a means by which computer services are delivered over a network (rather than housed in the hard drive of your own computer). As such, ‘the cloud may prove to be as disrupting an innovation as was the emergence of cheap electricity over a hundred years ago’; electricity also being a utility delivered through a network.

Part II deals with contractual issues (which must inevitably arise). Part II examines the protection of personal data in the clouds. Part IV, in addressing the issues of cloud regulation and governance, focuses on such matters as law enforcement, consumer protection and competition between cloud service providers and ends with an assessment of ways and means of developing effective cloud governance frameworks.

It seems that Millard and his team have tackled every aspect of this emerging area of law. Their plain English approach to what can be an abstruse subject will certainly be of benefit to both practitioners and scholars wishing to delve into the legal ramifications of cloud computing.

This is a carefully researched and extensively footnoted book and is very much one for our times. It will provide career-enhancing information as well as useful and indeed entertaining reading for lawyers and non-lawyers alike as further cloud development takes place.

This book is a timely and useful book written by English legal experts in the field.

It unpacks the technical nuts and bolts of international cloud computing and then proceeds to transpose the relevant law onto its various elements, relationships and players.

To be sure, some of the law is unsettled and untested against the novel technologies involved, but the authors make convincing arguments regarding how the law should be interpreted and applied in various concrete circumstances and factual permutations. This effectively helps the reader to “take a view” confidently on the issues as confronted by his/her client or employer, thereby limiting risk in the present tense.

I believe this book should be on every technology lawyer’s bookshelf. It should be required reading for the members of the Article 29 Working Party. It would be preferable if the drafters of the proposed 2014 EU Data Protection Regulation also downed tools until they have read this work. US information attorneys in particular will benefit from the book’s pragmatic and comprehensive treatment of European data protection laws in the cloud environment.

It is highly recommended.

Heart warming, funny, and down-to-earth

A feel good book. Period.
John Wright was the coach of the Indian cricket team for five years, and the Indian cricket team had unprecedented success during that period. Coincidence or not I don't know.

The book is neatly divided into chapters that correspond to a tour or season of the Indian team. So, there is one chapter each on the Australian team's visit of 2001 (who can forget that!), India's tour of Pakistan in 2004, the England tour of 2002, the West Indies tour of 2002, the Australian tour of 2003-04, etc... Then there is a chapter on Wright's experiences with the selection system, its regional quota system, another one on the struggles that the aspiring Indian cricketer has to go through to make it, or not. Srinath, Kaif, Kumble, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and many more are covered...

A few things I really liked about the book - Wright almost never drops names to sensationalize or scandalize, he writes about controversial topics without resorting to being sensationalistic (the Dravid declaration in the Multan test when Tendulkar was on 194* for examplem or about the team manager who liked to shortchange the team on their lunch money). The second point is that Wright ultimately comes across as a very decent man with a genuine love for India - which is very heartwarming indeed (contrast it with the rather supercilious 'In Spite of the Gods' by Ed Luce).

Rather than write more, I shall simply include excerpts from the book itself:

"I'd aspired to a successful second career. I wanted at all costs to avoid living in the past. In a sense, I failed." [Page 8]

About his visit to India for the interview as India's coach:
"The BCCI's travel people had told me just to turn up at the Lufthansa check-in counter with my passport; everything would have been taken care of. The dragon behind the desk asked, "Where's your visa. You can't travel without a visa." ... I could have produced a ukulele and serenaded her with 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips'. She was one of those implacable petty functionaries whose guiding principle is that there's no point in having the power to screw up people's lives unless you exercise it. I spoke to her supervisor, who'd evidently taught her everything she knew." [page 24]

Care to guess who Wright's talking about here?
"In Jodhpur, a guy with the biggest diamond ear-studs I'd ever seen wandered into our viewing area as if it was his private box. I went nuts demanding to know who the hell he was and, more to the point, who the hell he thought he was. The answer to both questions was that he was India's biggest beer baron." [page 43] - it's the one and only Vijay Mallya!

Here is spot on, and this is especially true of the press and former Indian cricketers (Bishen Bedi is one) who go overboard in running down the Indian team. Anyway, John has no love lost for the Australians, as is evident from the last sentence!
"Indians love their own team, but when a major side arrives they know how to make the tourists feel special. There's very little of the media mind games and psychological warfare you get touring some other countries, notably Australia, where the welcome usually takes the form of a dismissive spray from a famous ex-player." [page 46]

About the greatest Test every played:
"India is a country of one billion people, but on the second night of the second test in Kolkata I sat in a room 214 of the Taj Bengal with what felt like my only friends: four cans of Heineken and five cigarettes. Australia had made 445, despite a Harbhajan hat-trick, the first by an Indian in a test, and we were 128 for 8." [page 50]

"They were all out for 212 in 68 overs; having followed-on, we'd won the test by 171 runs. I remember embracing Andrew and dancing a jig with him... " [page 55]

"People would stop me in the street to thank for being 'our' coach. It was humbling, but also guilt-inducing, because many of those who thanked me for doing a well-paid job that I loved led lives of day-to-day struggle. The gratitude and support I received from ordinary Indians was the most positive force I've ever encountered, in that it simultaneously lifted me and kept my feet on the ground." [page 70]

Sabse bada rupaiyya:
"I had many deep and meaningful pre-game discussions with Indian groundsmen, pointing out that we had two spinners, so would they please push the ropes back? Then the TV company would demand more space for the advertising hoardings, and when we arrived at the ground on match day the ropes would have come in again and I'd get dark looks from the spinners. Money talked a lot louder than I did." [page 113]

"Yuvraj Singh's father, Yograj Singh, was a medium pacer who took 1 test wicket in his single test. Here's a clue: his sole scalp was a dashing left-hand opening bat from New Zealand who thrilled crowds the world over and later went into coaching." [page 117]

The 2003 World Cup match against Pakistan:
"As our openers walked down the long flight of stairs to begin the chase, Viru told Sachin, "Don't say anything to me about my batting except 'go and lagao' - basically, go for it. Sachin replied, 'I'm going to get these guys.'"

"Decked out in military uniform, General Musharraf spoke of the two teams setting an example of co-existence. Once he'd get the serious stuff out of the way, he had both teams in fits of laughter, referring to the sweets we were being served as 'weapons of mass destruction'. He said he knew the Karachi match was getting tight when he saw Inzamam-ul-Haq dive for the crease for the first time in 14 years.[page 178-179]"

It is amazing how popular this instrument is and how pluckers pluck ...

If you are looking for a book to learn how to play songs on a uke, buy a songbook. The "Jumpin' Jim" series is outstanding. Get Plucky covers in detail the history of the uke, famous players (pluckers), types of ukes, etc. It is a very interesting book, but I repeat it is more about the instrument and less about learning songs. It is amazing how popular this instrument is and how pluckers pluck it all over the globe. I wish the author would have written a piece about the banjolele (ukulele in the shape of a short-necked banjo) as played in Brazil. It is used to play tunes also played by the cavaco (cavaquinho), a cousin to the ukulele. The big difference in sound is the volume.

Great Little Book

I read this book 3/4 of the way through on first read. I love the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain of which the author is a member. While I am not quite a beginning Uke player, I am close. I haven't really read the instruction part of the book as yet, but the beginning part is well written and entertaining.

Will Grove-White's humo(u)r gives this wonderful book a sparkle most uke books lack. This book will please pro players as much as those who've never plunked a note. Quick history, influential performers, techniques, and many more facets of the ukulele from an early member of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain whose experience gives expertise in the joys of the instrument. This book is a quick read with great depths when reread (and you will want to play the fun exercises and songs he provides). Whether you love the ukulele, or have a slight curiosity, this book is a great companion.
