The masterful Max Lucado clearly touches hearts and souls as he seeks to make God's story my own. The power of the Gospel comes through clearly, lovingly and forcefully in every chapter. Some chapters took longer to read, however, because I was wiping tears from my eyes. An amazingly powerful book that draws one into the heart of God.

Great Read for the "Ordinary" Christian

I purchased this book for my mother. This is her review of the book: Very encouraging and insightful- as expected when reading Max Lucado books. He gives the reader hope that being "ordinary" matters to God and that he can use us for greater things, even though we sometimes feel insignificant. I hope this is one of many more Max Lucado books.

I bought the ebook and read it, now I am going to buy the regular book because there are many things I want to underline for future reference. It is an excellent book and it explains some things that I probably knew, but never thought about. I would recommend this book for anyone.

Corporate Power

A wonderful and well researched study of the origins of corporate power in America. It began with the Big Business reaction towards the gains made by the American labor movement in the 30s with the FLSA. That reaction was embodied in the most anti-labor law passed in the history of America, the 1947 Taft/Hartley Law. This is a must read for all labor activists out there. The book goes into the strategies and propaganda used then to sway the American people against organized labor. Many of the strategies of the past are still used today by American Business and this book will help you recognize them, answer them and effectively rebut them.

Important contribution to understanding the US

This book was recently strongly endorsed by Noam Chomsky and for good reason. There is an extreme scarcity of books that address the mechanics of propaganda in the US. For people interested in the details of how the US became the most propagandized society on earth, this book is an invaluable resource.

The true origins of McCarthyism

I agree with reviewer Wood that the writing is rather dense, but this is an indispensible take on mid 20th-century capitalist culture clawing its way back to post-war prominence. That Ronald Reagan played his role as spokesman for the Restoration, and became its symbol of victory, underscores the continuity of this long, bitter class struggle.

We see here the true reasons for McCarthyism: just as Stalin's blood purges used fascism as excuse, so did the US business world misuse Communism in their muted civil war to reclaim Washington and city hall, the universities and mass media. Ms. Fones-Wolf raises an important point that "business humanism" - as well as name-calling and repression - was instrumental in rivaling unions for worker loyalty, and neutralizing community attitudes. Yet I see another equally vital reason for the decline of unionism at this time: the rise of the suburb, sundering the urban working class community that made mass strike action viable. The suburban worker, rising to fight his way through rush hour traffic, surrounded by neighbors with totally different occupations and life histories, became an atomized cipher in the postwar world and thus powerless to meaningfully affect it. (Hence the rise of "postal rage" as ersatz outlet.) The anomie of the modern citizen of the "Western democracies" seems to have been consciously created by elites, to beat back their all-too-brief scare between the Depression and WW II.

This led to the alienation between liberalism and labor. Fones-Wolf touches on the origins of this split: its working class base eroding, liberalism turned to the civil rights movement; "culture issues" became the linchpin of intellectual progressivism. Workers left behind, in old factory towns or new developments, were lulled by a postwar boom economy into alliance with former enemies like Richard Nixon. The betrayal of "conservative labor" by its new "friends" has been the coup de grace of the struggle. Never again will labor - and possibly liberalism - enjoy such solid social power, and that defeat began in the desperate years outlined in depth here.

XLNT resource for Christians, especially home educators

101 More Hymns provides not only the histories of by-gone hymn authors and composers. It provides the complete sheet music. Some of these hymns are not found in the current hymn books. This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in older hymns and hymn histories. My children highly recommend this book as does as their mother.

Go beyond praise and worship

When I first became a Christian about 8 years ago, I somehow got the idea that praise and worship music was the truly "spiritual music" - hymns were old-fashioned, and people who enjoyed them did so because they were hide-bound by tradition. If you're thinking this now, please listen to me.
A year or so ago I heard about well-known and respected Christians like John MacArthur and Joni Eareckson Tada talk about how the old hymns were so meaningful to them and really strengthened their faith. That got me thinking: so it's not just stodgy old 80-year olds who love those old hymns. Maybe there's something to them after all.
So I got this book. And I have been so blessed by it. God has shown me that true worship is so much more than just a feeling. He wants all parts of me - my body, my soul, and my spirit - to be involved in worship. So many in churches today are satisfied with getting only their spirits involved; some want their body involved too (lifting hands, etc.); but the truly mature (I am coming to believe) also get their souls (or minds) involved. Your mind doesn't get involved when you just repeat "Isn't He" fifty times; it does when you sing (and really think about) the wonderful words to songs like "O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" or "Blessed Assurance."
Both these songs and many, many more are covered in this book. Get it, sing the songs, think about what Christ has done for you, think about the circumstances of their writing. And take your worship to another level.

Excellent summary of the all-time best 101 hymns

This 288-page book summarizes the most favorite 101 hymns used by main-line Protestant churches. Although it was written in 1982, it is selling well (my copy is the 11th printing in 1990) and its content will continue to be current. At a bargain price of about $10, Osbeck's book represents exceptionally good value.

The author appears quite well-qualified with a Master's degree in music from the University of Michigan and over 40 years of experience in church music.

The full hymn is printed, then Ken Osbeck provides a one-page summary of the author's life with focus on the circumstances of how each hymn came to be written.

I found it very helpful and insightful to learn the story-behind-the-story of each hymn. These poignant insights are very useful in explaining the hymn in Sunday school classes and to the entire congregation.

This book has my full recommendation, and for just ten dollars, it represents good value as well. The book is very readable for laypersons. (This reviewer is a geologist and not a professional musician.)

About the Author
In a sense, Jim Rumbaugh and Mike Blaha are two of the "founding fathers" of UML. They invented UML, the basis for UML, along with Booch notation. Their first edition was crucial to the development and adoption of Object-Oriented methods when they were in their infancy. Blaha is a worldwide consultant and is a partner with Modelsoft Consulting, and SentientPoint Corporation. He is active in the IEEE Computer Society. Rumbaugh is a Distinguished Engineer with the Rational brand of IBM and is one of the original co-designers of UML. He is a highly influential author.

lots of challenging exercises

One striking feature about this book is the sheer mass of exercises given for each chapter. OO modelling and designing using UML can be treated as a very high level process. Indeed it is certainly possible to do this, after reading the book. But the authors have striven to make as concrete as possible to anyone new to UML.

Just as one example, consider Chapter 3, on class modelling. It has some of the ambiance of the designing of relational tables, if perhaps you are more familiar with the latter. Books on relational design often have many examples and problems, to drive home the concepts to students. Likewise here. Granted, if you do hail from a relational background, the style of object oriented modelling, and the usage of UML with which to express this, will be different from what you are used to.

Later in the book, another useful feature is how you are challenged to convert pseudocode UML examples into actual code, C++ or Java. A vital skill. Since often a top down approach with UML is where UML encodes a large picture. But you then have to manually instantiate this as code. So the book gives you lots of practice.

By the way - the book also has useful tips on good object oriented practices for both C++ and Java. These arose out of the discussion about UML. But you should consider adopting these practices irrespective of whether you use UML or not.

Standerd stuff - hard to read

I bought this book in hopes of learning better molding techniques from the solutions to the problems considering the authors are well know experts in the field, but there are about 2 solutions for every 10 problems and the rest you have to get it from the instructor, sorry some of us are working professionals. The book is written in typical academic style: definitions, technique and example. Best practices or real word encounters are almost none. The techniques are standard nothing spectacular or advanced. I also found that the UML notation is poorly explained, so expect to use a supplement if you don't understand the notation. If you would like to go through a solid walkthrough while learning UML notation, Analysis and modeling techniques through 3 iteration of the unified process, more like the real world, I recommend Craig Larman's Applying UML and Patterns isbn: 0131489062. if you like to learn UML notation with well explained standard modeling techniques with practice problems and solutions consider Schaum's outline UML Isbn: 0077107411 who's authors' are reputed professionals in the U.K.

Good for today's standards

UML is still a pretty new notation language which is developing as we speak. An experienced programmer may run into some small ambiguities, where there is no concrete way to do something.

There are various names and notations for several things in UML. The capitalizations/small case for state diagrams may not always match up with other books, and some things can be drawn in more than one way. For instance, a pentagon to describe the entire diagram may exist or not be used at all in some cases.

The discrepencies not only show the language's slow progression because of many differing opinions of language developers, but it is also a good indication of how difficult it may be to notice and understand how functions and drawings are to be interpretted between books and software usage. What's also interesting is that Rumbaugh has written various UML books, so he is aware of many of these differences. The question is whether authors as a team could only agree on a certain way to write the book, or if Rumbaugh was more in a hurry with the others to just get books done and printed to make money. If Rumbaugh comes out with a book on his own, it may be worth considering strongly! The same could probably be true for Blaha.

Like many UML books probably, the book doesn't help you become aware of something like if an interface cannot be pointing to another interface. That is a more simpler example, but there are much more complex case whereas if you do not have a good grip on computer languages, it probably won't make much sense. Even though I cannot expect a book to cover most of these type of things, I think a book can attempt to cover some of these things so that a beginner could learn more easily. Part of the problem is because the language is still developing, and people just want to get books printed. If you know your UML well, here's your chance!

You can still pass a course not knowing any of the idiosyncracies, but at a graduate level, it will not be a fulfilling way to learn.

The way the book goes over the content it does cover, it does it very well. There are some things missing such as differing ways to show the same things, or it does not elaborate on topics enough that one would probably need to know for a graduate level course.

Gorgeous, Quality Book From the Grimm Series - Buy it Now at This Low Price!

First, buy this book if you are a fan of the series -- it is a keeper. You will be sorry later if they go out of print or go up in price.

Although the book is beautiful, glossy, with gorgeous drawings, etc. from the series, I was disappointed in the lack listings of some of the Wesen characters in the series. They are crossed off = X'd out in the Wesen Index. Especially since the Bauerschwein were featured in 11/8/13 episode as major characters in a feud with the Blutbaden (Monroe's Wesen character). Even Rosalie's Fuchsbau Wesen character is X'd out in the Wesen Index ("table of contents"). A total of 107 titles are listed including Wesen and, of those, twenty-seven are X'd out and not in the book. I wrote to Titan Books (to their readerfeedback email address given in the back of the book) and let them know. My question was: are only the Wesen listed that the Grimm have killed or who are dangerous? The Baueschwein were definitely dangerous in the recent episode.

To fans of the series (of which I am one):
In any case, don't delay purchase of this book - especially at this current price - you will love it.

A must-have for fans of "Grimm"

As any true Grimmster knows, Nick Burkhardt would have been lost without access to Aunt Marie's trailer and book of lore when he first discovered he was a Grimm. Now fans of the show can own their own copy of the book and learn even more about the Wesen Nick deals with everyday.

Written in mostly German, there are entries recorded in Spanish and Japanese; each entry has been translated into English for the general reader. Full color images of several of the Wesen are included alongside the pen and ink drawings of those Grimm who first observed the ferocious beasts dating as far back as the 1600s.

Beautiful!

This book is a Christmas present for my daughter who is a huge Grimm fan. She will love it! The book is gorgeous and beautifully detailed. One caveat- the pictures really are like those on the show so young children may be disturbed if they flip through this.

Alexander Hamilton, America sings for you

I've been eagerly awaiting the vocal selections since I first saw "Hamilton" last August, and for the most part it does not disappoint. 17 songs are included in their full, uncut performance versions with all solo and ensemble vocals. The piano arrangements (by composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and the show's brilliant musical director, Alex Lacamoire) effectively track the show's orchestrations and are not for beginners but also not beyond a good sight-reader. Note that the piano part is accompaniment, not meant for a solo - so you can either sing along (out loud or in your head), have someone else sing, or just play the vocal line in place of the right-hand arrangement.

I do feel some letdown at the songs that are not included, most particularly the Act One closer "Non-Stop," the Act Two closer "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story," "The Story of Tonight," and the eminently singable "Say No To This." (Some of the other omissions are more understandable, as they rely more on rhythm than orchestration and would be difficult to transcribe.) And it would have been nice to include a few production photographs at the front (for a dazzling array of those, you'll have to pick up Hamilton: The Revolution). But what's here is so good that it's hard to quibble, and I know I will enjoy many hours at the piano recreating my experience of this astonishing musical.

and I can't play them from a larger screen like a tablet because they're much too blurry

Rating this five stars for the content, but a warning: DO NOT purchase the Kindle version of this. I don't even know why it's offered. I bought it because I thought it would save me a few dollars under the (very mistaken) assumption that there would be some way to read this music in a way to play the piano parts from it. However, on screens larger than a phone, the sheet music is VERY blurry, and I can't find any way to make it both large and clear. I can't play piano parts from my phone without hunching over and squinting, and I can't play them from a larger screen like a tablet because they're much too blurry.

I suppose there may be some method that I'm simply unaware of, but as far as I can tell, the Kindle edition of this songbook is completely and utterly useless, a waste of my $10.

If you love Hamilton and want to have the official sheet music, definitely make this purchase. The hard copy is, I'm sure, absolutely worth the money. But unless I'm missing something important in how to use Kindle editions of books, DO NOT buy the Kindle version.

If anyone who sees this knows of a way I can access the digital book in a way that is conducive to performing, please kindly let me know.

A Must-Have for all of us Hamilton-obsessed!

Anything Lin-Manuel Miranda puts his hand to is amazing beyond belief - and this is no exception. If, like me, you are in love with All Things Miranda, you simply must have this. The only reason I took off one star is actually my little quibble with Amazon's pricing. I pre-ordered this at $16.99 - the day it arrived, the price dropped to $11.99, then $12.30, now $11.99 again. I don't understand why the price should drop 25 or 30% right after I pre-order. It doesn't seem right. Incidentally, this is a very full, fat, rich book of selections - I brought it to Staples for them to cut and bind, which I do with all my music. It makes it so much easier to not be fighting to keep it open. Anyhow, if you are obsessed with Hamilton, as is Yours Truly, you must have this - at ANY price!

UPDATE: Amazon, you amaze and astonish! I got an email from you today, telling me of a $5.41 refund due to the price having dropped after release. Well, shut my mouth. How could I ever have doubted you? I'm changing my 4 stars to 5, if it lets me. Thanks so much!
