About the Author
Michael Dylan Foster is Associate Professor in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University. He is the author of Pandemonium and Parade: Japanese Monsters and the Culture of Yokai and numerous articles on Japanese folklore, literature, and media.

Shinonome Kijin is an artist and scholar of yokai. He lives and works in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Absolutely fascinating read

I am and have been a long time lover of culture and religion. So much of my reading over the years, focuses on non-fiction titles which can be classified in those two categories.
First off, I have never read anything else by this author, and this is the first book completely dedicated to the yokai that I have read. So my knowledge as well as my experience may be a bit flawed by these facts.
Over all this is a really good book, and a very readable book, the latter will come as a bit of a surprise to those whom are familiar with academic writings. Which this book is, but the author says very early on in the book that his aim while writing was to bridge the gap between academic and lay reading, and I think he did a very good job at this.
Now don't get me wrong, there are a few places where it gets bogged down a bit, in explanation and theory, but it doesn't last long.
I think the most useful thing about this book, not only the obvious that you will gain a lot more understanding about the yokai, but also, how "beings" and "ideas" such as the yokai, have changed, adapted and evolved alongside the Japanese culture, with no break by a competing or subjugating rival religion.
This is something as westerners we do not have the luxury of enjoying when it comes to pre-Abrahamic beliefs, as they did the favor of either erasing, changing or subverting our ancestors pagan beliefs to the point that eventually you have to dig through a cultural array of different "Christian" festivals and traditions, to get the puzzle pieces of one unified idea or another. Doable, and is done.
But its nice for a change to be able to see the entire "horizon" if you will, without having to change our vantage point over and over again.
I think there is a lot to be learned here from that perspective, on top of yokai in general.
In the end, if you have even a faint interest in yokai, and you are relatively or completely new to the study, I imagine this book probably ranks high up there in areas to not only begin but get your footing.

I will say I fully enjoy it. I am very interested in Japanese culture ...

While I have not finished the book yet, I will say I fully enjoy it. I am very interested in Japanese culture and also the various stories/myths/etc..Also as an artist always looking to learn more about the legends and creatures of different cultures. This book is more of the academic. If you are looking for something with just a bunch of stories of youkai and pictures, then this isn't exactly the book for you. The first part of the book gives a nice look into the history of the youkai in Japanese culture, their evolution, and so on. The second part of the book has a few illustrations and a listing of various youkai with descriptions and mentions some of the tales surrounding them. I would say if you are someone who has been interested in the subject and are looking to learn more about how these various entities appear and evolved in Japanese culture you might enjoy it. If you are looking for a quick summary of youkai, or a more illustrated piece, then you may be disappointed. For me, I gave it 5 stars because I find it quite enjoyable and interesting. Although, that is just my opinion.

Exactly what I was looking for!

I've been doing my best to find research on yokai for over five years. The book explains the progression of yokai folklore in Japanese culture before introducing us to them, which was proved helpful. It breaks down the progression and changes of their impact over the ages. It's more than simply telling us about the different yokai, but understanding why yokai exist.

Brilliant Exposition on A Little Explored Topic

This book is superb.

Though occasionally extreme in its disapproval of sexual activity, the book is nonetheless brilliant. Please take into consideration that it was written at a time when doing otherwise would likely have prevented it being published.

Within its pages is revealed a doctrine barred from the eyes of the laity for thousands of years, and known only to a select few initiates over the past few hundred.

The book covers higher consciousness, and the mode of its attainment. It does however, only offer hints at the process, leaving the reader to his or her own experiments. It has to be so, for the intricate details concerning the Great Work can never (or at least, should never) be explicitely documented in books intended for dissemination to the general public.

Please use the works of Elisabeth Haich and Selvarajan Yesudian as an adjunct to this work. Those of Paul Foster Case will also prove immensely useful.

This book, if read aright, holds the key to your evolutionary, viz. spiritual salvation.

LAWRENCE HARTE is the president of APDG, a provider of expert information to the telecommunications market.

Mr. Harte has over 23 years of experience in the electronics industry, including company leadership, product management, development, marketing, design, and testing of telecommunications (cellular), radar, and microwave systems. He has been issued patents relating to cellular technology. He has authored over 75 articles on related subjects and has been a speaker and panel moderator at industry trade events.

Mr. Harte earned an executive MBA at Wake Forest University and received his B.A. from the University of the State of New York. During the TDMA digital cellular standard development process, Mr. Harte served as an editor and voting company representative for the Telecommunications Industries Association (TIA) TR45.3., digital cellular standards committee.

RICHARD LEVINE is the founder and principal engineer of Beta Scientific Laboratory and is also Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at Southern Methodist University. Randomly ordered bluetooth specs

I'm glad the book exists because it does break down the myriad bluetooth specs into bite-sized chunks. I wish the book didn't copy and paste from the specs one paragraph at a time. The ordering of the various descriptions doesn't seem logical. They jump all over the place from circuit ids to piconets to how inquiry works via channel hopping. If you use the book as a reference to refer to acronyms and specific parts of the specifications, it works. Even then, contents are strewn across multiple sections.

Currently I am still working on the "Introduction to Bluetooth" 2nd edition book. So far I have found the material both interesting and useful. There are, however, some complex ideas and techniques that I hope to be able to understand with further reading and study. I like the book and look forward to what progress may await me..

Great book, Deserves more attention

This book gives much hope for the future and an interesting blueprint of how life can be if we let creativity flourish. Lars examines society/civilisation all the way from cavemen till what we are today. A long the way you get insights into why some civilisations failed where others succeeded. He then delves deeper into why we fail and why we succeed. Very interesting read and would recommend to everyone who cares about a successful future.

Mostly a good read and realisticly priced by BAR

I expected a more realistic covering of the archeological evidence concerning the prophets rather than a more biblical view. once into the first millennium bce it does a good job of covering the material. I purchased my new copy from Biblical Archeology Review for $30 which is a more realistic price for a paperback book.
