Content rich, editing poor

Disappointing not in terms of content but in poor editing which results in needless repetition. The topic is one worth reading about, the research is sound and referenced, but the variable quality of some passages can distract an interested reader. The section on Simpson alone seemed to raise the same points with a frequency which made me wonder if my kindle was looping.

As an aside: in order to convince the reader that the thinking in the book is current, references to the common law principle of the "prudent man rule" in relation to fiduciary duties should have been referred to as "prudent investor rule."

This is not nit-picking but the above are an example of how a book should aim to be precise and succinct rather than meet a 240-odd page target (I am reading the kindle version but assume that it is within the typical range for most books).

Nevertheless, I plan to trudge onwards and complete the book in order to glean the insights since newer books on value investors are a rarity and help to further form a picture of names we consider synonymous with the approach and perhaps even to improve our own strategy on longer term wealth creation.

probably in an attempt to up the page count, the authors repeat basic information throughout the book. this approach may make each chapter a complete topic on its own merits, e.g., if interested in reading about a particular investor.

when read cover to cover, it's clear easily 20% of the book's passages were referenced at least once elsewhere in the text.

It's a great book. It is somewhat repetitive. I seem to read the same quotes multiple times throughout the book.

The profiles are inspiring and informative. A few that I had not heard of. A well read investor will know most of the investors profiled in this book.But putting them together and focussing on the concentration in their respective styles is a new twist.

Definitely worth at read!

fact or fiction?

Thompson certainly knows how to spin a compelling yarn. But whether that yarn is factual or fictional is difficult to discover in this woefully short-on-footnotes book.

Fortunately for Thompson, there is a fair amount of on-the-ground & in-the-archive evidence suggesting that the official history of the American West is not precisely what really happened.

Unfortunately for the reader, that leaves a knowledge gap that George is happy to fill with tales that scratch the reader's itch for adventure while leaving their thirst for facts less than sated. Where can we visit those Native-American mine works? Where can we see that Spanish armor found during the construction of I-70? What archive holds the waybills? What sources discuss Wakara, mines & Brigham Young? What became of those uncovered mission bells?

George isn't saying. Maybe he's protecting anonymous sources? Using inside knowledge to hunt for his own treasure? One thing is certainly true: it would be an enlightening kick to read the author's original files.

The book contains a lot of fascinating anecdotes, but--perhaps due to the nature of the secretive material--not as much hard evidence as one could hope. After all, even the pre-revolt Spaniards in established areas like Santa Fe seldom directly reported their documented mining activities in the hopes of avoiding taxation & the withdrawal of state support to the community. Are there pre-settlement mines in the West? Absolutely. Is there--or was there ever--lost treasure? Hm. At least one solidly supported example of a find would go a long way to building credibility for this Easter Bunny tale.

Thompson's greatest success with this book is reawakening a sense of wonder & fascination with American history that gets quashed in most of us by crushingly uninspired elementary education. His adroit weaving of disparate, often uncelebrated threads--Mormon settlers, Spanish explorers, Mexican traders, Native American heroes, the plate fleet & English pirates--into a riveting fabric is a gift to the reader, &, with the guidance of a very good, very savvy teacher, would make an excellent classroom tool.

His greatest failure is in coming off like a snake-oil salesman. Buy this book to inspire you to get outside & hoof around the desert while thinking deeply about history.

Just don't be a naif & grab a shovel.

An excellent read-full of history & tales of lost treasure.

The book was thoroughly enjoyable as the author takes the reader through more than 3 centuries of history in the American Southwest from the first Spanish conquistadors to the American settlers. Tales of lost mines and treasures fill the pages. Of particular interest is the magnitude of early explorations of the southwest from the early 1500's to the 1800's. For anyone interested in the history of the southwest and of lost mines and treasure, this book is a must read. This reader's interest was certainly piqued and I will undoubtedly seek out more information about this gripping period of history.

Strong historicity of the "OLD SPANISH WEST". Very few people know, or care, that the "West" belonged to Spain for 300 years until "Americans" drove west to the gold fields and claimed "The West" with blood and bullets. Utah is full of Legends and Facts!

For expert and layman alike

Fuller's excellent work does a good job of making the complexities of Hinduism comprehensible even to a non-expert--not an easy task. The Hindu religion is of course not an institution in the Western sense, but rather a collection of beliefs and practices, ever-changing, in many cases highly local, and bewildering to the Western monotheistic mind with its "330 million" gods. Its complexities both drive and result from the infinite complexities of Indian society itself, and an understanding of Hinduism is crucial for any understanding of the country. I read the book in preparation for my second trip to India, and it made the experience infinitely more enjoyable and understandable.
Fuller's explanation of the principle of "hierarchy" as the underpinning for both Hinduism and Indian society as a whole was very enlightening, as one realizes that it is completely antithetical to Western thought which values individual freedom above all else. Particularly good is the description of the structure of Hindu worship, or "puja," which despite its infinite variations Fuller contends consists of 16 (more or less) steps, of offerings and services to the deity. The description of the caste system, which bears almost no relationship to the Western notion of class, is excellent. Fuller's explanation of the concept of purity, and how it drives the status and treatment of women, is also very good.
More casual readers may feel a bit bogged down as later chapters explore more esoteric subjects such as devotionalism and village rituals. From a scholarly point of view, I'd say this book is at the college text level, and like college texts it gets more complex as you work your way through. But this work is more than worth it even if you focus on the first few chapters. Highly recommended!

Filling the gap

Fuller provides an up-to-date presentation of the popular practice of Hinduism in India. Using ethnographic data and personal field research in a Minakshi temple in south India, Fuller provides a window into daily worship unladen with ancient textual scriptures and controversial philosophies, however, giving careful representation of the traditional, and mainly centralist, view of Hinduism as a point of reference. Fuller presents the basic why's of Hindu practice in an easy-to-follow format and language throughout the text. Beginning with an anthropological account of Hindu society in India, he continues with chapters on gods and goddesses, worship, sacrifice, rituals, devotion, pilgrimage, and misfortune, giving special attention to women's issues in the second chapter on devotion. I found this work extremely helpful in understanding the practical application of many previous works' attention to the Vedic texts and philosophies. A work of this subject and caliber had been lacking in Hindu scholarship until this book.

Each case study traces its colonial and post-colonial history, the evolution of its distinctive social and physical structures, and its intersection with the region and the world. It pays particular attention to, inter alia, the effects of recent wars, migration patterns, petroleum prices, noting the increased role of ‘rulers’ in city planning/real estate investment both within and between Arab countries. Each traces the increased interactions between multinational firms and local developers as they strategize and compete to elevate themselves to global city status. Neoliberalism and State-sponsored advanced capitalism are all implicated in the painful task of balancing identity and post-modernity.

Arabian Urbanism 101

This is a great book that has helped me understand the history of Arab cities and the varying development patterns across the region. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in the Middle East. It's also a quick primer on any of the cities featured in the deep dive section. The section on Riyadh was excellent.

A difficult subject

The book starts out well and the writing is quite elegant. Probably I would have liked more about the grieving process and less about how society treats old people. In general it is a fairly interesting book on a difficult subject. Don't be fooled by the title. It isn't a "How to" book at all. More of an overview about the aging process.

Would have been even better with a reference list to back up her good information.

I'm a gerontologist, so try to read the popular press as well as research. I like what Anne says in most of the book, however, I would have liked her to reference some of her research. Her points are good, so it would be nice if the readers were aware of the considerable research supporting them, and didn't think she was sharing her opinion or assumptions. The information is great and it's a simple read on a challenging topic. I especially like her comments about ageism and aging stereotypes.

It sounds cliche, but it is nothing short of lifechanging . . .
By Sustainable.
A careful and subtly triumphant guide to reprogramming our minds to radically accept loss but not decline. In fact, that's one of the lifechanging suggestions that Karpf posits after presenting ample evidence: loss, inevitable within our narratives of life, does not dictate decline. Loss can, in fact, refine or even improve.

Karpf confronts many unspoken toxins lurking in our Western notions of aging on these pages, and she initiates healing. This is definitely in the right Series: "the school of life."

Darrell L. Bock (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. Known for his work in Luke-Acts, Dr. Bock is a Humboldt Scholar (Tubingen University in Germany), an editor-at-large for Christianity Today, and a past president of the Evangelical Theological Society (2000-2001). A New York Times bestselling author, Bock has written over thirty books, including Luke in the NIV Application Commentary series.

Daniel B. Wallace (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary. Read this as a primer before you read the next Da Vinci Code

Having enjoyed reading books such as The Rozabal Line, The Da Vinci Code, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, The Woman with the Alabaster Jar: Mary Magdalen and the Holy Grail, The Gnostic Gospels etc. I had assumed that this book would not appeal to me. I was wrong.

I genuinely believe in many of the contrary views. For example, I do not believe that Jesus was the son of God. I do not believe in the Virgin Birth. I do not believe that he was resurrected i.e. the he "physically" came alive after his death on the cross. I believe that Mary Magdalene must have had a more important role than the one attributed to her by the Church. I am not too sure whether I believe that Christ survived the ordeal on the cross or not. Thus, you see, I am not the ideal person to read or post a positive review about this book.

And therein lies the importance of this positive review. If I could read this book cover-to-cover, digest the arguments (not necessarily agree with them) and then leave myself open to the possibility that some of the traditional Gospel versions of events could possibly be true, it would mean that this book has done its job. It has, in that sense succeeded. Before I started reading this book, I was convinced that the Gnostic gospels held more truth in them than the Canonical ones. After reading this book, I have become a little more balanced in my approach. That is probably what the authors were aiming for anyway... the text and style is not at all "thrilling" or "mysterious" and hence this book is not "sensational". Instead it attempts to provide a more balanced view of the Bible and asks us to view alternative theories with a little more scrutiny.

Read this as a primer before you read the next Da Vinci Code that comes your way. Conservative Christians will like this book in any case. The problem is whether the skeptics will view it positively. While the "style" leaves much to be desired, the "substance" (including the numerous references to the multiple sources that DO, in fact, support the Canonical version of events) creates a level playing field in the world of books on Christianity.

Rethroning Jesus

I will not hide my bias as I begin this review. I think it's always important to be honest about where you're coming from. Jesus is on the throne in my belief system and I feel this book may help put him back there for many others. I found the chapter that covers claim six, "Jesus' Tomb Has Been Found and His Resurrection and Ascension Did Not Involve a Physical Departure," to be the most useful brief rebuttal that I've seen. The authors clearly show, for example, that approximately 21 percent of Jewish women were called Mariamme (Mary) and that nearly 5 percent of men were named Jesus; therefore, the odds that the ossuary with the names Jesus and Mary on it being a family tomb of Christ are very slim indeed.

I think the authors point out a very real issue when they say, "The fact that there is so little to this hypothesis (that the family tomb was found and Jesus did not physically resurrect) and yet it gained so much attention and created so much hype raises the question of whether our culture is truly ready and willing to come to grips with the claims of Jesus as they have been made over the centuries." It seems that many today are interested only in hearing what will make them feel better instead of the truth. Having read other even more in-depth critiques of the family tomb propaganda, it's clear that there is not truth there and that it's filled with illogical assumptions; yet I've encountered many who call themselves atheists in the past few months who refer to it as an example of the fallacies in the Christian faith. It's interesting that they say they've reached their position with rationality and logic.

This book shows the weaknesses in the challenges. It does not focus on defending the positions of Christianity in an in-depth manner. If you're looking for that, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, if you're looking for a good book to read as you read the books that make the claims the authors deal with, I think you'll find this one the best on the shelf.

Good rebuttal to current attempts to dethrone Jesus

This book addresses the following six current claims from recent books that attempt to "unseat the biblical Christ:"

(1) The original New Testament has been corrupted by copyists so badly that it can't be recovered (e.g., Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why (Plus), Lost Christianities: The Battles for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew, and The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture: The Effect of Early Christological Controversies on the Text of the New Testament.

(2) Secret gnostic gospels, such as "Judas," show the existence of early alternative Christianities (e.g., National Geographic's "The Gospel of Judas," and Bart Ehrman's The Lost Gospel of Judas Iscariot: A New Look at Betrayer and Betrayed.

(3) The "Gospel of Thomas" radically alters our understanding of the real Jesus (e.g., Elaine Pagels' Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas.

(4) Jesus' message was fundamentally political and social, e.g., Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan's The Last Week: A Day-by-Day Account of Jesus's Final Week in Jerusalem.

(5) Paul took captive the original movement of Jesus and James, moving it from a Jewish reform effort to a movement that exalted Jesus and included Gentiles, e.g., James Tabor's The Jesus Dynasty: The Hidden History of Jesus, His Royal Family, and the Birth of Christianity

(6) Jesus' tomb has beeb found, and his resurrection and ascension did not involve a physical departure, e.g., the recent Discovery Channel documentary.

Each claim in dealt with in a separate chapter. The final chapter is an excellent summary of the whole book. One point that they frequently make is that framing an argument as "either/or" isn't necessarily correct. It could be "both/and."

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a better understanding of the arguments for and against these claims. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was that the authors frequently said things like "the details are not presented here because thay can be found in such-and-such a book," which I am not likely to buy or find in my local public library. A few Notes or Appendices would have been nice and would not have detracted from the excellent readability of the book.
