Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors uses a new, unifying conceptual framework to identify the shared features underlying structural obstacles to innovation in major Legacy sectors: energy, air and auto transport, the electric power grid, buildings, manufacturing, agriculture, health care delivery and higher education, and develops approaches to understand and transform them. It finds both strengths and obstacles to innovation in the national innovation environments - a new concept that combines the innovation system and the broader innovation context - for a group of Asian and European economies.

Manufacturing is a major Legacy sector that presents a particular challenge because it is a critical stage in the innovation process. By increasingly offshoring production, the U.S. is losing important parts of its innovation capacity. "Innovate here, produce here," where the U.S. took all the gains of its strong innovation system at every stage, is being replaced by "innovate here, produce there," which threatens to lead to "produce there, innovate there."

To bring innovation to Legacy sectors, authors William Bonvillian and Charles Weiss recommend that policymakers focus on all stages of innovation from research through implementation. They should fill institutional gaps in the innovation system and take measures to address structural obstacles to needed disruptive innovations. In the specific case of advanced manufacturing, the production ecosystem can be recreated to reverse "jobless innovation" and add manufacturing-led innovation to the U.S.'s still-strong, research-oriented innovation system.

About the Author

William B. Bonvillian is Director of the MIT Washington Office. Previously, he served as a senior advisor in the U.S. Senate. He has taught technology policy at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and MIT. He has served on a National Academies' Board and five Committees, received the IEEE Distinguished Public Service Award and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a frequent speaker on science and technology policy topics. Early in his career, he served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Transportation, and was a partner at a major national law firm.

Charles Weiss was Distinguished Professor of Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service until his retirement in 2014. He was STIA director from 1997-2006 and the first Science and Technology Adviser to the World Bank. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has a B.A. in chemistry and physics, summa cum laude, and a Ph.D. in chemical physics and biochemistry, both from Harvard University.

About the Author
Prof. Rollett has been a Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) since 1995 and was the Department Head 1995-2000. Prior to CMU he worked for the University of California at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (1979-1995). He spent ten years in management with five years as a Group Leader (and then Deputy Division Director) at Los Alamos, followed by five years as Department Head at CMU (1995-2000). The main focus of his research is on the measurement and computational prediction of microstructural evolution especially in three dimensions. His interests include strength of materials, constitutive relations, microstructure, texture, anisotropy, grain growth, recrystallization, formability and stereology.

He was the Chair of the International Conference on Texture (ICOTOM-15), which was held on campus at CMU June, 2008 and is a member of its International Scientific Committee. From 2001-2013 he was the Chair of the International Committee of the conference on Grain Growth and Recrystallization that is held every three years; the next meeting will be in Pittsburgh in 2016. He was a co-Chair of the 13th International Conference on Aluminum and its Applications, which was held on campus at CMU in June 2012. He is a co-author of the texture analysis package popLA, and the polycrystal plasticity code, LApp; he is also a contributor to the Dream.3D software package and the well-known textbook Texture & Anisotropy edited by Kocks, Tom� and Wenk.

Gregory S. Rohrer is the W.W. Mullins Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, the Head of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, and former Director of the NSF sponsored Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his bachelor's degree in Physics from Franklin and Marshall College in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. He is the author of over 240 publications and has received the following awards: National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award (1994), Roland B. Snow Award of the American Ceramic Society (1998), Ross Coffin Purdy Award of the American Ceramic Society (2002), Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2003), the Richard M. Fulrath Award of the American Ceramic Society (2004), the Robert B. Sosman Award of the American Ceramic Society (2009), a Sapphire Prize from the Journal of Materials Science (2011), and the W. David Kingery Award of the American Ceramic Society (2014). Rohrer gave the Lawley lecture at Drexel University in 2005, the Winchell Lecture at Purdue University in 2007, and the GE Distinguished Lecture for MS&E at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2009. Rohrer is an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Ceramic Society, was the chair of the Basic Science Division of the American Ceramic Society in 2005, and chaired the University Materials Council in 2011.

Humphreys and Hatherly did a super job here of compiling the latest information from an incredible number of resources. Good definitions for annealing phenomena and nice explanations of the mechanisms taking place. Good figures and images. I used this resource to help understand dynamic recovery and recrystallization in 304 stainless steel.

It was yet another night of lying in bed, worrying about all sorts of things, when something told me it might be time to take a look at that book I purchased a while ago. I had no idea what to expect. I just knew I wanted to learn a little more about myself and my soul. So I started reading, and found myself moved by Janet's stories about the amazing surprises and blessings that are in store for us when we write this way. I felt a sense of peace that had become a stranger to me. I'm a seasoned journaler and I've read all the great writers on the subject -- Kathleen Adams, Christina Baldwin, Tristine Rainer -- and yes, Tristine's work is wonderful at helping us see how writing can connect us to something bigger, how patterns and meaning emerges through our lives, and how we can write our story in a way that is spiritually powerful. But nothing prepared me for Janet's work: here was someone talking matter-of-factly about the downright miracles that can happen when you connect like this, and she's the most down-to-earth person who talks about miracles you could ever meet! I knew she was right because at my most connected, most aligned, the miracles have happened for me, too. I even been working on a memoir about that for a couple years now because I thought I had so much to share with the world. This book and Janet's work is teaching me that I haven't scratched the surface. There's more. So much more. And I've experienced incredible things that most people just wouldn't believe, so that's saying something.

It's the first thing to *really* speak to me in a really long time, and while I can name a handful of books that were life-changing in one way or the other (I LOVE reading), this one blows the others out of the water. The other books were inspiring, but this one is more than that: it expresses in the most concrete terms what to DO to change your life. It's a guide to that, to transformation, to how to be real, to how to listen to your intuition, to how to connect in the deepest way, to live authentically -- even how to get even more out of those other life-changing books! It works so well because she doesn't teach each of these things specifically; they just naturally emerge from this incredible process.

Since I read this book a few weeks ago, I:

* Have felt so creative that it's as though every muse is whispering in my ear at once.
* Have felt God working in my life in so many ways.
* Went from feeling that it would take a miracle to fix all the things that are messed up in my life to actually seeing that miracle.
* Have clients rolling into my business no thanks at all to marketing; this process just led me to reconnect with what's valuable about my work, and they started coming!
* Went off an antidepressant I had been on for 2.5 years. A little "glitch" in my health insurance made my refill more expensive than I could afford, and because I was paying attention, thanks to Janet's work, I took it as a sign that I didn't need them anymore.
* Have a more focused vision of my passion in life than I have ever felt before, more concrete than ever, and I've been struggling with this for a long time.
* Have had so many wonderful experiences that I'm surely forgetting some huge ones.
* Have not gotten much rest, honestly, because I have a lifetime of Writing Down Your Soul to catch up on! And in fact, when I try to "do" something "productive" sometimes inspiration will suddenly strike and I'll have to stop to do something like, well, write this review.

Full disclosure: I also joined one of Janet's telecourses since reading the book, and that certainly helped to propel me in this direction, but it's all thanks to Janet's stuff, and it all starts with this extraordinary book.

Not for Me

I was disappointed in this purchase. I guess I was expecting writing prompts or a list of questions that could get the journaling juices flowing. Every other word in some of the chapters was God, and I do believe in Him, but the first word in the title is Writing, and there seemed to be very little talk of writing except to discuss all the writing the author did during her traumatic experiences, or buying a cheap pen and notebook and finding a place to write. I would think that goes without saying. For me, I honestly think you can write from your soul without prayer or meditation. If God is everywhere, then God is with me when I'm writing. And, for me, I find writing is a form of meditation anyway.

The author also mentioned that Christina Baldwin jumpstarted the trend of journaling, but I beg to differ. I think you can go farther back to the days of Virginia Woolf and Anais Nin; women authors that encouraged other women to write from their hearts. I didn't hate the book because I'm sure it's a good fit for some people. I just didn't like it for me.

Make Up Your Own Mind

Read it for the science and understanding how what we write (words we use) and how we write (not simply facts but emotions) connect to specific brainwave types (theta waves) and how that yields solutions (resolution in story terms). Also the number of days you need to write, for how long, at at what time impacts the outcome in regards to neuro-pathways to change our thinking.
This book does have religious tones but if you are not interested in religion, as I am, the science alone is quite informative an insightful.
Do not let anyone's review keep you from critical inquiry.
Also, for those who are resistant to reading any book with a lot of positive reviews, let me explain that the business of being an author requires that we put our book out en masse to people in exchange for an honest review because those who do not know us or our work require reviews in making up their minds. If you do not trust this practice, read it and make up your own mind. After all, you are the boss of you.
