Victoria L. Kilbury holds a doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership and teaches graduate students pursuing degrees in education. This is her
first mainstream book, after publishing educational articles and research. Victoria resides in Las Vegas where she met Nabila at the local athletic club. The two "gym junkies" quickly became friends and Nabila, who
wished to remain anonymous, asked Victoria to write her story.

A Different View

"Disenchanted" is a fantastic overview of life in Saudi Arabia from the perspective of one woman. Nabila's story is fascinating and the author's telling describes cultural mores in a manner understandable to western women. Having spent much of her youth in Egypt and her young married years in the United States, Nabila did not experience traditional indoctrination into Saudi society. As such, she has a unique perspective--that of a Saudi woman as witnessed through eyes shadowed with Western experiences. Nabila was clearly born a strong-willed woman and, coupled with her early experiences abroad, was particularly sensitive to gender discrimination. A stabbing theme throughout the text is required dependence on men and Kilbury's descriptions clearly illustrate discrepancies between Saudi genders.
Kilbury does not make the mistake of treating Quran-based Muslim beliefs and radical Islamic beliefs as synonymous; she clearly delineates the two and, through scriptural passages leading each chapter, focuses on the beauty of Muslim tenets. Kilbury does, however, unabashedly tell one woman's story. I would love to read a companion biography, also by Kilbury, telling the life story of a Saudi woman who was born, raised, and naturally-indoctrinated into the culture.
The book is very easy to read and extremely insightful. I recommend it for western women who wish to better understand Islamic cultures and for women in Islamic countries who wish to better understand how western women view their culture.

I found the story extremely enlightening about how women are treated in other parts of the world.
I don't know how Nabila had the emotional strength to work outside the home, continue her education, and raise a family when at the same time she was reeiving such physical and emotional persecution from her husband and his family. I know I would not be emotionally strong enough to deal with all of that.
The only slight problem I found with the story was that many of the episodes about her mistreatment by male family members were redundant, but maybe that was nescessary for the development of the story.
My curiosity was peaked. I would like to know how Nabila had the courage to finally leave all that she knew and loved and came to Ameria alone. I hope the author will do a sequel that will take Nabila's story from Suadia Arabia to America and her new productive life in Las Vegas.

"Disenchanted: One Woman's Journey for Independence from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" was a sad story that seems determined to make readers hate all Middle Eastern males. It also glossed over many issues. Incidents such as Nabila's shaming at her school for being seen with a young man were briefly mentioned in passing, almost as if there was no real concern about what must have been a very traumatic time. I realize that Nabila did not write this herself, but I found the third-person writing to be rather juvenile in many spots. This is very much a first novel, and seemed intent on making sure that no one thinks any woman could be happy in Saudi Arabia, and that all Saudi males are misogynistic. That may well be true, but I question statements such as no one in the Kingdom shows respect for or is polite to each other unless it is someone like a clan patriarch. There were a lot of such blanket statements in this book, which should raise alarm bells. Overall, while I think Nabila suffered a great deal, her story deserves better editing than it has received. I've read many books about Middle Eastern women and currently live in the Middle East (yes, I am female), and don't believe every woman I encounter is as abused or downtrodden as Nabila. I was impressed with Nabila, but disenchanted with the overall writing and editing of this book.
