About the Author

Sir Douglas Wass spent the main working part of his life as a senior civil servant in the Treasury, which he joined in 1946 after War service. His experience ranged over all aspects of the Treasury and he represented the UK in both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He was the Private Secretary to two Chancellors and to the Chief Secretary. In 1981 he was appointed Joint Head of the Civil Service. After retirement he gave the Reith Lectures on how the system of representative government works in the UK.

The book is a good start and an invitation to find knowledge and resource necessary to be an efficient healthcare facility manager . This is in no way a tool to help passing the CHFM exam if you don't have healthcare facility experience .

Flash Cards Study System

I was convinced by the description this was a good product. After I received it I found out it was not going to be a good study guide and was certainly not worth the money. The Compliance section had no real questions and the descriptions were poor at best. There may have been some good information for someone in high school but that was it. No formulas to use on pay back, nothing on FTE calculations, just nothing. I went ahead and invested more money on a real study program. Not worth the money or effort. Great marketing though.

These brain scans even though they show FMS exists, they won’t help the Fibromyalgia patient find a cure. When I say cure I mean cure. If you or someone you know is diagnosed and suffering from FMS, there is a way to get back to the natural state of a human being, which is healthy, pain free, full of dynamic energy, sleeping great and waking refreshed. This natural state of health can never be achieved by dealing with the symptoms of FMS with medications. When you look at the horror that people with FMS have endured, you have to feel great compassion. Imagine going to doctor after doctor, and negative test after negative test, and taking medications, and suffering the whole time, and then being sent to the psychiatrist because if the tests are negative it must be a mental condition. And this happens all the time! Fibromyalgia patients suffer physical pain, but perhaps the greatest pain is not being heard. For them, it is almost a relief to have the diagnosis of FMS, so their suffering is recognized and validated. I have had patients as young as 12 years old and up to 73 years old come to me diagnosed with FMS, with the average age being between 25 and 45. Every aspect of their lives has been affected with this disease, limiting even the most basic of daily activities and family interactions. I have seen relationships torn apart and the black cloud of FMS descend on whole families even though just one person has FMS. FMS affects spouses, siblings, children, and friends of the person suffering with FMS. Now, the tough part of this is that Fibromyalgia is a disease that, according to medical authorities, is incurable. The Mayo Clinic definition of Fibromyalgia is: Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event. Women are much more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, a variety of medications can help control symptoms. (The highlights are mine.) Think of this: the Mayo Clinic is held up as a great medical authority in this country. And they say, “characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.” And “Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress” and “there is no cure for fibromyalgia, a variety of medications can help control symptoms” Their definition is widely embraced by most rheumatologists and most medical doctors, and even alternative practitioners hold to this view. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein

I was jay-walking across the street, and all of a sudden I was struck by a car. I had both my legs broken, my sternum fractured, my skull fractured, my liver bruised, and my heart bruised. My front teeth were knocked out. I was lucky to be alive, and when I was taken to the hospital, I got the finest medical care the world can provide. Our emergency medical care in this country is the best in the world. They will absolutely take someone that's near dead and save their life. For healthcare the American medical system has a horrible record; but for emergency care, it's incredible. I was so grateful to the doctors that saved my life. When they suggested knee operations, I agreed; after all, they were the experts. They did the first operation on my knees, and they felt okay; but then they did another operation and they felt worse; and then they did another operation and they felt even worse; and I started to think, “Wait a second. When they're operating, are they putting stuff in or taking stuff out?” They're taking stuff out. So with these operations, arthroscopic surgery after arthroscopic surgery, I was still hurting, and I was limping. They said, “Of course you're limping. You damaged your cartilage; you damaged your joints. Don't worry about it. We're going to keep you comfortable.” They talked about pain medications, and I thought, “Gosh, being drugged.” I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to play with my kids. I always wanted to be the dad that I didn't have; my dad died when I was a young kid. I wanted to be there for my kids, and I didn't think I was going to be there. There is nothing more frightening! So the medical world really wasn't offering me hope. It really wasn't. I was seeing a Chiropractor at the time, and it was interesting, because he was doing adjustments on me while I was in a wheelchair. I don't know if you know this, but if you've ever had two broken legs at one time, you're not mobile. So I'm in the wheelchair, and I'm going in there, and after every operation I'm back in the wheelchair; and wheelchairs are not fun or comfortable. The Chiropractor is adjusting me, and he's saying, “Your body is designed to heal; it's designed to be healthy. Your body can regenerate.”

Heal the body naturally and as God intended

Dr. Bergman always pushes Dr. Palmer's philosophy of letting God do His work and thus let the body heal itself from all the assaults modern life throws at it. Your body is smarter at a cellular level than any man, woman, or corporation (lets see them build one from scratch!). Magic pills just mask the symptoms and eventually screw up something else in the metabolic processes, usually the kidneys and liver, making you feel even worse in the long run. They are usually very expensive, and never seem to cure or reverse the disease and bring you back to 'normal'. Dr. Bergman says Normal is possible, but it takes some healthy changes in lifestyle.

Clean up the diet, thus clean up the blood, exercise or walk a bit every day, and let your own endorphins, interferon, proteins, vitamins, epigenetics, and so on do their job and heal your body from all those chemicals, neurotoxins, and endocrine disrupters you have been exposed to from foods, pollutions, paints, beauty products, cleaners, assembly and testing-related jobs, etc. over the years. These cause the chronic illnesses that the medical establishment and Big Pharma has no cure for, since cells aren't getting the nutrition they need to function at 100%. Fibromyalgia is difficult since it is systematic and there is no simple blood test, scan, or anything to confirm the pain that sufferers know is there (and not just in their head), and there is no man-made magic pill to quickly reverse it, and probably never will be due to the nature of the disease.

Dr. Bergman's philosophy is that if you weren't born with it, it can be reversed by the same amazing mechanism that brought you from a tiny pin-sized egg to an adult, which man cannot replicate. You must trust your own body to do what it must to preserve itself, and you need to restore the nerve supply. Sometimes the body does weird things, like grow a tumor or excess fat cells, but that is probably just the body encapsulating and putting into 'deep storage' a toxin that it can't shed. Help the body shed the various toxins, then goodbye tumors, aches, and excess fat! Cells in organs, bones, cartilage, organs, guts, etc. are constantly being replaced, and a year from now, you basically have a brand new body. So, Why don't you feel 'new'??? It is because of toxin build up; a bazillion medical studies support this: toxins are bad for you at every level. The body tends to retain them over the years, especially metals like mercury (from fillings), and lead (from chewing cheap pencils), but also bromines (from some breads), and a slew of others. Getting rid of them is not easy in today's modern world. This is where Dr. Bergman's book and doctors like him are a big help.

If you are reading this, it means either you or someone you love has aches throughout their body and no energy, and you want to change that and reverse it; but everything you have tried so far hasn't worked. The solution that is in this book starts to work noticeably within weeks, and it is relatively inexpensive, though you must do your own cooking, and get your pinched nerves unpinched by a chiropractor and some physical therapy, so your nervous system can communicate throughout your body and do its job. The needed 'healthy' changes also positively affects anyone around the affected individual on a regular basis, which is a good side effect! There are no negative side affects by making the needed changes to a healthier lifestyle, getting off ALL drugs (Rx & OTC), and thus getting an healthier body. Food costs may go up, but medical expenses plummet. Personal energy goes up. Chronic pain goes down.

Dr. Bergman's extensive knowledge of what goes on in the cells at the molecular level, what nutrients they need, and what poisons the cells, and the interaction between them helps with almost ANY chronic disease. Dr. Bergman is an excellent teacher, where even the average layman can understand and see the sense in the biochemistry of the body. His extensive YouTube videos supplement the book; they are helpful when it comes to recalcitrant parents who need help with chronic conditions. If y'all know the 'why's', hows, and what the goal is, then improving your (or your loved one's) life is easy, at least compared to the alternative of staying medicated and miserable until one dies of kidney failure (like my dad).

FIX THE CAUSE

The book is about fixing the cause and not treating the symtoms. Treating the symtoms doesn't heal you. All the pill pusher doc's out there don't really help anything but the pocket books of big pharma and them selves. Follow the money and you will find the truth! There is no money in healing you but there is plenty of money in return visits to the doctors, pharmacy and hospital. Why do you think cancer is on the rise and more people die each year from it. Atack the source of desease and a cure will follow. Thanks Doc for a black and white common sence approach to healing. I am a big fan of your youtube videos.

Dr Bergman is a brilliant man with a love for his fellow man that is evident in his writing. The truth of what he teaches just jells with you as you read this book. This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book. For example, the CP violation currently measured does not explain the matter�-antimatter asymmetry of the observable universe; the neutrino oscillations and the estimated amount of cosmological dark matter seem to require new physics beyond the Standard Model. A list of other introductory texts, work reviews and some specialized publications is reported in the bibliography.

This book aims to provide the basis of theoretical foundation and phenomenological knowledge of the structure of matter at the subatomic level. It starts by presenting the general concepts at the simplest level and does not require previous knowledge of the field, except for the basic quantum mechanics. The readers are gradually introduced to the increasingly more advanced topics, so that this text can accompany students all the way to their graduate and doctoral studies in experimental high-energy physics.
Special emphasis is placed on�experimental and phenomenological aspects of the field and how measurements and theory interplay in the development of particle physics. The book is based on the authors’ undergraduate and graduate lecture courses at the University of Bologna, Italy.

About the Author
Giorgio M. Giacomelli became full professor of Physics in 1971. He is (co)author of > 650 publications in scientific journals and over 350 reports and conference proceedings. He supervised 115 Laurea Theses, 30 PhD Theses.� He received prizes from the Italian Physical Society, the University of Bologna and from the A. Della Riccia Foundation. He is “Marchigiano of the year 2006”. In 1981 the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) listed him in the “1000 Contemporary Scientists Most-Cited in 1969-78". He is presently in the Highly Cited list of ISI.
He was Director of the Institute of Physics, of the Department of Physics (1975-88) and President of the Laurea in Physics Committee of the University of Bologna. He was a member of many national and international scientific committees (SPSC, LEPC and ECFA at CERN, HEP at Fermilab, of INFN, of the ENI foundation, of CTS of ENEA, bioethics of CNR, of the Galvani Committee). Presently he is Emeritus Professor at the University of Bologna, collaborator of INFN and CERN, Fellow of the American Physical Society, Socio Benemerito of the Italian Physical Society, member of the European Physical Society, of the Accademia delle Scienze di Bologna, of the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Accademia Teatina. He is one of the Editors of the Journal “Astroparticle Physics”.

Excellent primer - looking forward to an expanded 2nd edition

Excellent for putting most of particle physics together. But relativity and quantum physics are not included in particle physics presented. So I am not sure of the completeness of the material. Instantaneous properties, gravity, source of fringe patterns ... are not related to the fundamental interactions so there definitely room for another edition to be written.

good coverage with modern applications but at an advanced level

Bremaud is a probabilist who mainly writes on theory. This is no exception. It is an advanced mathematical text on Markov chains and related stochastic processes. As with most Markov chain books these days the recent advances and importance of Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, popularly named MCMC, lead that topic to be treated in the text. It is interesting that the other amazon reviewers emphasize the queueing applications. Queueing theory isn't really covered until Chapter 9. The book is rigorous and deep mathematically. It includes stochastic calculus in Chapter 9, a difficult topic even for probabilists.

Good introduction to queuing theory

This book gives a general overview of the more classical results and tools in queuing theory and Monte Carlo simulation. The author gives a review of probability theory in Chapter 1. Measure theory and real analysis are not used here nor in the rest of the book so it should be accessible to advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Random walks and stochastic automata are used as examples of discrete-time Markov chains, the topic of Chapter 2. The author's discussion is very clear and concise and easy to follow. The important topics of ergodicity and recurrence are discussed in Chapter 3, in which the author gives a nice definition of the invariant measure, a concept which is usually presented much too abstractly in modern texts. He gives a very nice elementary example of an irreducible, homogeneous Markov chain that has an invariant measure, but that is not recurrent.Network engineers will appreciate the example of instability in the slotted ALOHA protocol in this section. Physicists will like his discussion of the ergodic theorem in the last section of the chapter. The next chapter discusses the important topic of convergence to equilibrium, and he does a good job of doing this without using real analysis or measure theory. The definition of convergence relies on a concept of distance in variation between two probability distributions. A brief discussion of thermodynamic irreversibility is given in this chapter, and illustrated nicely with Newton's law of cooling. The concepts of absorption and renewal are treated in this chapter in a way that is very intutive and understandable. A cute example of absorption is given in terms of sister-brother mating in genetics. Chapter 5 covers martingales and Lyapunov functions, of current interest to financial engineers and network engineers. The author returns to the slotted ALOHA example of Chapter 3 and shows that altering the retransmission probability will give stability to the protocol. He discusses the practical limitations of this solution to instability by an analysis of collision-resolution protocols subsequently. Potential theory is introduced in this chapter and the author again manages to do it without real or complex analysis. The important Perron-Frobenius theorem is discussed in the next chapter on nonhomogeneous Markov chains. The genetics example introduced earlier is given as one where the eigenvalues of the transition matrix are computed. The author shows that the eigenvalue problem for transition matrices is tractable for the reversible case. Chapter 7 deals with Monte Carlo simulation and the author does a fine job of introducing the concept of a random fields. He does get into some topological notions here, by defining neighborhood systems on the elements of a set. This might have been a problem for the reader not versed in point set topology, but the author gives the reader good insight by relating these notions to vertices and edges of a graph. Gibbs distributions are introduced in a manner similar to what would find in an undergraduate book on statistical physics. The Ising model and neural networks are used to illustrate Gibbs models. The author discusses the Gibbs-Markov equivalence in a nice, detailed manner.Those interested in computer graphics will enjoy his discussion of image models and textures in the third section of this chapter, and again in the next section on Bayesian restoration of images. Section 5 is all physics, where magnetization and the Ising model dominate the discussion. The simulation of random fields, along with the all-important Markov chain Monte Carlo method are the topics of the next two sections. The discussion of MCMC is definitely the best part of the entire book. The Metropolis algorithm is discussed in detail. The last section of the chapter discusses simulated annealing and the discussion is again made very intuitive and avoids the usual multivariable calculus. Chapter 8 deals with continuous-time Markov models and the author does a good job, via examples and proofs, of making the relevant notions clear and understandable. Infinitesimal generators are introduced via stochastic matrices, and jump processes, so important to financial engineering, are discussed in this chapter. The author does discuss the Kolmogorov equation in this chapter, giving the reader a nice taste of stochastic differential equations. Queuing theory dominates the last chapter of the book, via Poisson systems. Readers get their first taste of stochastic discrete-event dynamical systems, and network modeling engineers will definitely want to pay close attention to this chapter. The mathematical manipulations could be viewed as a warm-up maybe to later advanced reading on Ito/Stratonovich calculus, and so financial engineers will be interested in this discussion. All the standard queuing theory of networks is discussed in the last sections of the book. Students of network engineering, physics, financial engineering, and mathematics will want to take a look at this book. Its price is reasonable and it is packed with information and insight. Definitely worth reading.

Good Book for Queueing Theory

From the context of a network engineer with basic mathematics training, this is a useful book but a little tough going at first. However, with a little help with a more introductory book on Markov chains and stochastic processes I quickly started actually understanding and using the concepts in the book. It gives a very good insight into the operating characteristics of queues, especially with regards to Slotted Aloha. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a more than casual interest in queueing theory, but be prepared for a little hard work if you have limited training in probability theory concepts.

Excellent

I've just recently discovered Duffy's works and I like them. Though he writes about a variety of military history topics his primary focus is the 16th - 18th centuries and the type of warfare they fought. It's always been an area that has interested me, but I never found much quality and in-depth material.Christopher Duffy has corrected that problem. This book takes every aspect of the military experience from 1715 - 1789 and looks at it in great depth. The officer, the common soldier, the general, campaigns, battles etc. It's very readable and beautifully researched. Each before mentioned topic has it's own chapter as do many others in the book and they all recieve equal attention. It works as both a survey book for the general reader and a in-depth study for the more knowledgable scholar. I reccommend it strongly. If one is wondering about any quibbles I may have, and there always are quibbles, it would be that the book could have used some illustrations, but that's a minor quibble indeed. If your interested in this subject or just military history in general you could do far worse than buying this book.

Linear Warfare

Christopher Duffy is a definite authority for this period of history and this volume is a must for all students of the period. Additionally, students of the Napoleonic period should read this book as it gives the background, both practical and thoeretical, that led to the Revolution in tactics and strategy that was Napoleonic warfare.
Crisply written, thoroughly researched, this book is a great read, packed full of excellent material, and is an asset to every library. My only complaint is that I would have liked more material on the American Revolution.
The age of 'limited warfare' as it is sometimes called is generally misunderstood. Its battles, however, were savage, bloody affairs and the author brings this point out, as well as painting an excellent picture of the age of which he writes. It is a benefit to all students of military history that Duffy's books are being reprinted and that he is still writing and producing excellent history.
If you haven't read this book, you are missing out both on excelent history and an intellectual treat.

Following the Fife and Drum

This book is a contribution to what might be called the anthropological school of military history. It is about a time when the modern organized society was just beginning, and the timeless system of hierarchy and patronage was coming to an end. When Europe was ruled by theoretically absolute monarchs who practically had less power then a modern government because of the resistance of entrenched custom. When wars were simple power struggles, commanded by noble-born officers who came because that was what nobles did. And fought by soldiers who seem to have quite reasonably regarded the army as another form of workhouse.

The military culture of the eighteenth century is described in detail. It was made by it's time and place and took it's characteristics from it. In some ways it was like the modern military, in others it was like the medieval. And in others perhaps it would not be recognizable to either. Above all it shows the eighteenth century soldiers as human figures with faults and virtues. Some officers were the sort that gave the Old Regime a bad name, being corrupt or cruel. Others were intelligent, cultured, and compassionate. Some men were pillagers and vandals. Others were honorable men who took pride in their calling. But whoever they were, the author gives a picture of their life as they marched with weary feet along the road of war.
