Fascinating... but true?

Headlined as an investigation into the lives of three of the UK's most notorious 60's gamblers - James Goldsmith, John Aspinall & "Lucky" Lord Lucan - and claiming to reveal, for the first time, the true story behind Lucan's even more notorious "disappearance" - one of the UK's longest running murder mysteries - "The Gamblers" is a quite riveting insight into a bizarre world of power, glamour, addiction, fabulous wealth and self destruction. Like the friend who recommended it to me I read it virtually straight through and while I left with as many questions as answers I discovered, on the way, a whole host of mind-boggling facts about the people who populated London's most exclusive gambling den, "The Clermont Club", and its now iconic sister night-club, "Annabel's".

Cleverly underpinned by sufficient clearly genuine information to make you believe it all, you are, by the last third of the book, quite prepared to fully accept Pearson's take on Lucan's fate, even though the lines between objective analysis and sensationalist interpretation have in fact become fairly blurred. But no matter because, in the end, "The Gamblers" is much more than simply another title-selling angle on the Lord Lucan saga, rather an intriguing exploration into a part of London's "swinging sixties" scene that most of us never knew existed and a fascinating study of what draws the rich & privileged into the ridiculously high-risk world of big-money gambling.

Great condition, pretty much brand new, the EXACT same as the regular fifth edition hard back but for less than half the price! I saved over $100 by buying this rather than the hard back version at my school book store, and I looked through the hard back and soft back international version with my teacher and they are both identical. Project management wizardry

I purchased this book for use in my graduate school project management course and I must say, I have been quite impressed. It explains the concepts and application of management theory fairly concisely and very thoroughly. There is no BS filler material and I have found it to be quite interesting and incredibly useful when attending lecture and participating in class discussions. Many "real world" examples of the concepts are given, which help quite a bit when translating the concepts into practice. If you are required to have this for a course (it claims to be the Superman of PM textbooks), or whether you want to brush up on knowledge for your PM certification, this is most likely going to be the book you want to purchase.

The Haunted opens up with Abbey heading back home to Sleepy Hollow. She is still dealing with her friend Kristen's death, and her relationship with Caspian. She is back to her perfume making and is trying to figure out what exactly is going on with Caspian, and herself.
Abbey is a more formidable character in this installment, she is learning more about herself, and also seems more sure of herself. In my review of The Hollow, I stated that I hoped that she would grow more of a backbone, and she seems to have definitely evolved from that person into a newer, stronger, more resilient one. Caspian has also grown as a character. I really enjoyed reading about the two of them, but wish that we could have seen more of Nikolas and Katy. I think Verday has hit her stride in this installment and many questions asked in The Hollow are answered in this book. The book starts off slowly, and gains momentum, capturing the reader's interest while setting the stage for its haunting conclusion. As an avid fan of anything to do with the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, I enjoyed the paranormal element, and hope to see more of them in the final installment. I absolutely loved this book and am happy that Abbey is figuring things out.
All in all, a spectacular read. Based on this book alone, I would have to say that I would buy the full trilogy, and add it to my re-read shelf. Fans of the first book will love this installment. Those who didn't enjoy the first book should give Verday a second chance as this book was exceptional. It is slow to start, but the payoff is worth the wait.

About the Author
Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on April 16, 1890, to Edgar and Jane Warner. Her family included a sister, Frances, and a brother, John. From the age of five, she dreamed of becoming an author. She wrote stories for her Grandfather Carpenter, and each Christmas she gave him one of these stories as a gift. Today, Ms. Warner is best remembered as the author of The Boxcar Children Mysteries.

For Tolkein fans...wonderful!

It takes great strength of mind to be able to stick through this book, but if you're a true Tolkien fan, you'll love every minute of it. The Book of Lost Tales Part I tells the story of Eriol, a great mariner who finds his way to the lost island of Tol Eress�a, The Lonely Isle, where dwell a lost tribe of Elves. He finds himself in the company of Lindo and Vair�, who grant him shelter. He becomes a part of their lives, eagerly drinking in the stories they have to tell him of the origin of the world, and the ancient times, of Valinor, the origin of evil, the great works and deeds of the gods, and the creation of the world as it exists now.
For readers of the Silmarillion, many of the stories are familiar. They are told, however, in greater detail than that which is set down in the Silmarillion, and contain several interesting literary differences. (Nearly all of which are expounded on by Christopher Tolkien, who is, of course, the son of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.) Some are as small as name changes, some are opposing details about the events surrounding a character. (Such as Dwarves were originally an evil race by nature, and Beren was an ELF!)
Christopher Tolkien pored through the scribbles and snatches that his father composed in his lifetime, and somehow managed to put it all together in this published form. He even offers commentary on each tale once it is finished. I often found that these commentaries are of little interest; I enjoyed the tales themselves more. Still, there are unique facts to be gleaned, such as such-and-such a page containing differences between this tale and that that Tolkien wrote, and a few interesting facts about his father.
The book contains the very beginning of Middle-Earth, as told to Eriol by Lindo. The Music of the Ainur, he learns of, and the coming of the gods down to Valinor. He learns of the dark deeds of Melko, the coming of the Elves, the darkening of Valinor, the creation of the sun and moon, the flight of the Noldili. The book ends with a tale told by an Elf named Gilfanon about the travail of the Noldili, who fled Valinor after the theft of Melko. Following the end of tales is an index on names, the etymologies, the development of names, etc.
Reading this book really gives you a feeling for how much work and effort went into the creation of the books we all enjoy, The Lord of the Rings. But little do we realize that there was a good three thousand years of history prior to that story - and Tolkien wrote it all.
If you have an enthusiasm for the works of Tolkien, the tales prior to the Rings trilogy, and the history of Middle-Earth, than you should read this book if you can. I'd recommend reading the Silmarillion first, even if you have already read it once; Christopher Tolkien compares the two many, many times. Also be forewarned that this book can be a little dry and long-winded. But for true Tolkien aficionados, it's worth every minute.

"The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1" is the first of two volumes containing the very first versions J.R.R. Tolkien wrote of the legends that ultimately formed "The Silmarillion". He began writing these stories during World War I, and his quest for perfection in their form and presentation was so rigorous that he was unable to publish any version of "The Silmarillion" before his death in 1973. His son Christopher edited "The Silmarillion" for publication and followed it up with thirteen more volumes of his father's writings on Middle-earth and Valinor: "Unfinished Tales" and the mammoth twelve-volume series "The History of Middle-earth," of which "The Book of Lost Tales" comprises the first two volumes.
"The Silmarillion" itself fails to appeal to many readers of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings," and the thirteen tomes that followed it will have even less appeal to such readers (except perhaps for the four volumes that show how Tolkien went about writing LotR). However, for Tolkien aficionados the History series (affectionately abbreviated HoMe) is essential reading, and "The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1" is not only its beginning but one of its most important volumes. In it are found versions of the early stories of "The Silmarillion" (the birth of the Two Trees, the coming of the Elves to Valinor, the flight of the Noldoli or Gnomes, later renamed the Noldor by Tolkien, into exile, and the making of the Sun and Moon) which are far fuller than any later versions written by Tolkien, but the plots and nomenclature of which are still far from evolving into their final forms. Reading these stories is necessary to gain a full appreciation of the beauty of Valinor and of the Trees, the Elves' longing for which underlies all of Tolkien's work.
Even those readers who dislike "The Silmarillion" should seek out this book in their local libraries for the sake of the first few pages of Christopher Tolkien's introduction, in which he explains the peculiar nature of "The Silmarillion" and why it inevitably has a different sort of appeal than that of "The Lord of the Rings," and thus may put off readers who enjoy the latter work. For Tolkien fans, "The Book of Lost Tales, Part 1" is highly recommended reading.

He continues to learn the stories of the ancient world they have to tell him, of the great heroes of the world after its corruption by the Dark Lord Melkor.
For readers of the Silmarillion, many of the stories are familiar. They are told, however, in greater detail than that which is set down in the Silmarillion, and contain several interesting literary differences. (Nearly all of which are expounded on by Christopher Tolkien, who is, of course, the son of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien.) Some are as small as name changes, some are opposing details about the events surrounding a character.
I enjoyed reading this book, partly because I am a Tolkien aficionado, and partly because it satisfies the fantasy itch in a lot of people, myself included. The Book of Tales 2 begins (sort of) where Book 1 left off. The stories that the editor, Christopher Tolkien sets forth are less whole and complete than those found in book 1, but this is by no means the fault of Christopher Tolkien. His father, beloved author and scholar J.R.R. Tolkien was perfecting and re-shaping these tales to his death in 1973.
Nonetheless, the stories are enjoyable to read. In Book 2, we read such stories as the Tale of Tin�viel (Or, L�thien) the elf-maiden who forsook her immortal life for the love of a mortal man, Beren, much as the more popular union between Arwen and Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings books themselves. Of course, the most startling and shocking idea was that in this early version of the story, Beren was not a man at all, but an elf! He was but of another race of elves, which caused the high price of a Silmaril for L�thien's hand in marriage by her father. There are several different elements of the story changed as well, such as L�thien's need to save her love from the house of Tevildo, (a feline precursor to Sauron?), the evil cat-like creature who enslaved Beren. Of course, all these changes and many more are commented on, and highlighted by the ever-thorough editor.
Also found is the story of Turin Turambar, the man who roamed Middle-Earth with much sorrow and woe, who won both misery and renown for his great skill and his misdeeds. An extremely sad (and long!) tale.
After this, the tale of the great fall of Gondolin, the great city of refuge, hidden from Morgoth until it was brought down by treason from within. Hence from this destruction escaped �arendil, the great mariner of whom great tales are told of later. The tale of the Nauglafring, the Necklace of the Dwarves is told following this tale, with different changes in it as well.
Following this is the tale of �arendil. This differs so much from the original story that most of us know from reading the Silmarillion that it's not nearly as wonderful of a story to read.
Finally, there is the history of Eriol, or �lfwine, the man who first came to the Lonely Isle and learned these great stories from the Wise that dwell there. Most astounding and odd in this history is the idea that Tolkien had apparently conceived; that the lands where the Elves dwelled came over time to be England! The Lonely Isle was dragged from its place by Ulmo, but his rival Oss� took hold of it to drag it back, and broke of a part, which became Ireland. In this case, one must wonder where the land and time of Middle-Earth itself, with its hobbits, wizards and orcs came to pass, if that land eventually became England!
For my part, I find that these stories are fun to read, but if you are interested in the true substance of the tale, your best bet is to read the Silmarillion. The stories are often condensed, but they are in their finished state (as much as can be finished), and there are no footnotes to go and read.
Following the end of tales is an index on names, the etymologies, the development of names, etc.
Reading this book really gives you a feeling for how much work and effort went into the creation of the books we all enjoy, The Lord of the Rings. But little do we realize that there was a good three thousand years of history prior to that story - and Tolkien wrote it all.
If you have an enthusiasm for the works of Tolkien, the tales prior to the Rings trilogy, and the history of Middle-Earth, than you should read this book if you can. I'd recommend reading the Silmarillion first, even if you have already read it once; Christopher Tolkien compares the two many, many times. Also be forewarned that this book can be a little dry and long-winded. But for true Tolkien aficionados, it's worth every minute.

This saved me tons of money

This version of the book was a lot cheaper than any other edition I found. I needed it for my anthropology class and this was cheaper then renting it anywhere. It is used but it is an atlas it doesn't need to be in mint condition and you don't need to buy a top dollar one this will suffice for the majority of your needs for a world atlas so get you a nice one save yourself some money and go with this.

About the Author
Avinash Dixit is Emeritus John J.F. Sherrerd University Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he offered his popular freshman course in game theory. He is among the world’s leading economists, having made fundamental contributions in several major fields as well as in game theory. He is the author of many books, including Dixit/Nalebuff: Thinking Strategically (Norton, 1991), Dixit/Pindyck: Investment Under Uncertainty (Princeton University Press, 1994), and Dixit/Nalebuff: The Art of Strategy (Norton, 2009).

Barry J. Nalebuff is the Milton Steinbach Professor at the Yale School of Management. Nalebuff applies game theory to business strategy and is the co-founder of one of America's fastest-growing companies, Honest Tea.

One of the best introductory works on strategy

Thinking Strategically is one of the first books I ever read on strategy. Since I read it it has changed my perspective and way of thinking and analyzing all sorts of problems from business to personal life. The book in a sense has become a manual of problem assessment in my life I have used its concepts in situations where I have to predict rivals moves in business, work and personal life. Also its concepts help you in situations where you have to bargain or assess opportunities and disadvantages in purchases, investments or even in choosing your partner. Thinking Strategically is a rational approach to decision making that can reduce the stress and anxiety of uncertainty and will give you better control in life. In the end outcomes in life are statistical and through good strategy you have a more dominant position reducing risk and loses.

The only thing missing in the book might be Harvard's strategy expert Michael Porter, who is one of the most important proponents on business strategy with his theory of the 5 forces. However Porter's approach is eminently business oriented and it doesn't have much applicability in other types of non-business scenarios.

Thinking Strategically is more a general overview of the most fundamental concepts and theories in strategy and definitely a must read for those interested in understanding more about decision making. Its power for the general public is the easy to understand reading of complex mathematical and economic concepts.

Fun Read - Good Book

So I recently moved from Banking industry into consulting. I keep hearing strategy this, Strategy consulting and it just confused me as to how is it different from plan. So I went online and looked this book up, an man is it interesting. It is a good book. So let me make few key points here:

- It is fun to read from page one (This is important to note as I am not a reader, i am a watcher, i love to watch movies)

- It is laid out well, I was infact so impressed that i started making notes as a I read it, and i suggest to get most out of this book make notes.

- Will this help you think strategically, umm I am not so sure, however, it will help you analyze what you read in the newspapers on a daily basis. Be it Budget talks in the white house and how one side is pushing the other over, how they strategize, you can actually guess and understand more than what you read at the surface in the news papers. And trust me it is a cool nerdy feeling. So in a way it helps you look into how people respond and build your best response. So over time it will help train you to become a strong strategist, but don't expect to be running Bain and company by the end of this book.

- Finally Price - you cant beat it, so much knowledge for so little, its like the arm chair economist, you should buy that too, if you like fun reads like this.

"Strategic thinking is the art of outdoing an adversary, knowing that the adversary is trying to do the same to you." So begins Dixit and Nalebuff's guide to gaining the competitive edge. They intend this book for "businessmen," politicians, football coaches and parents--anyone who contends with an adversary. Their goal is to teach readers about game theory, the "emerging science of strategy," without jargon or mathematical formulas.

They begin with "ten tales of strategy" from a variety of settings. Using examples from sports, politics, history--and even a children's fairy tale--the authors illustrate the pervasive need for strategic thinking. Successive chapters present aspects of strategic thinking and explore their variations. Initial chapters address anticipating a rival's response, seeing through a rival's strategy, and adopting the best strategy in the cooperate-or-betray game of the Prisoner's Dilemma.

The authors then explore the art of making strategic moves, actions "...designed to alter the beliefs and actions of others in a direction favorable to yourself." We learn about unconditional moves as well as threats, promises, warnings and assurances. Succeeding chapters explain the value of making credible commitments, of sometimes being unpredictable, and of "playing chicken" with brinksmanship. We learn the relative strengths of cooperative and competitive strategies and how to choose between them. The final three strategy chapters explore the possible moves when adversaries are voting to make decisions and how to make the best use of bargaining positions and incentives.

There are numerous brief examples throughout the book. Each strategy chapter closes with a more elaborate case study to be analyzed using the chapter's principles. The final chapter is a collection of 23 fresh case studies that serve as a "comprehensive final exam" by drawing on strategies from all chapters. The authors achieve their goal of a readable, nontechnical introduction. They even lead us into some minimally-painful use of decision trees and contingency tables.

I recommend the book as a serious introduction to strategic thinking. Well, perhaps the occasional cartoon it includes disqualifies it as "serious." But its lessons prepare readers to act strategically in serious, real-life situations. Reading it is a good move.

About the Author
Kim Jones is a writer with big dreams and a creative imagination. Her infatuation with the MC lifestyle inspired her to write a short story about a love affair between a prestigious young woman and a bad-ass biker. After falling in love with her characters, she turned the ten-thousand word short story into a novel. Juggling her writing and her role as ol’ lady to her husband, Reggie, her first novel, Saving Dallas, was published in May of 2013. Saving Dallas Making the Cut, the sequel to Saving Dallas, was published in September 2013 and she plans to release Saving Dallas Forever, the final book in the Saving Dallas trilogy, in February 2014. Kim resides in Collins, MS with her husband Reggie, two dogs Neo and Maggie and a twenty pound cat named Cici.

Dallas & Luke

Luke dropped in my eyes in this book - running his MC like a good old boys club where the women need to look nice but keep their mouths shut, and then turning something that should be a sexual kink into abuse. Sorry, that is my opinion. This is Dallas, the CEO, the professional powerhouse who has survived so much & yet again, she is in danger. And she willingly puts herself there knowing that she might not make it out! Dallas says of Luke, "I couldn't imagine the willpower it took for him to let me do this." WTH? YOU are the one in danger & being tortured NOT Luke!! Even though she was just captured by mobster Charlie in the last book, she flies to his side to request his help. Charlie has a soft spot for Dallas & won't really hurt her, or will he? This book was just crazy & Dallas fell right in line with the other old ladies in the MC & it didn't make any sense - her powerful personality just disappeared. I should have not finished this book - pretty early on there is a scene when Luke is furious that Dallas went directly to Charlie without his knowledge, without his permission probably. What Dallas referred to as a "spanking" and what the other old ladies laughed & joked about, was not funny in the least. The only thing that would have rectified the horror that Luke put her through was if Dallas ran from him & never looked back. Wow, can't tell you how disappointed I am that this book bothered me so much!!

Potentially Excellent Book Marred by Domestic Violence

This is the third book in the Saving Dallas forever series. I loved 80% of the book but there were a few areas where I distinctly disliked it. So there are sections of this book where Luke is to die for; their love and passion for each other is so intense and hot and steamy and the romance and love between them is just as passionate as ever. SPOILER ALERT However, there is a section of the book where Luke beats Dallas with a belt because he is upset with something she did. Now, I did understand him being upset but to me NOTHING excuses his beating her with a belt. First, her tolerance of this behavior seemed so out of character for her - where was spunky Dallas with a backbone? She gets upset with him about it for about a day but then she actually rationalizes his behavior. This was so upsetting to me I almost stopped reading the book, in fact, I had to put it down and leave it alone for a day. First, the author tries to minimize Luke's behavior by calling it a spanking - 1) Dallas isn't a child, she's an adult. When adults have disagreements and conflict, we use WORDS, not hands or belts; 2) it wasn't a spanking - the bruises he left on her means he BEAT her - if either one of them had done this to a child, child protective services would have been involved; in some but not all states, this behavior would constitute assault. At one point, she says she would never be submissive to Luke - what is tolerating a beating; playing house? I was so disappointed in the way this episode played out in the book. Yes, Luke was sorry, but they both basically rationalize and justify his behavior and even joke about it later. At one point Luke says he is not a man who would put his hands on a woman - but a belt is OK? Not using your hands makes it better, less abusive? This is the type of thing that makes people think physical abuse is OK, by minimizing its effect, calling it other names like spanking rather than what it is: A BEATING. After a day, I was able to move on and pick up the book, but to be honest, this scene spoiled the rest of the book for me and I found that it was hard for me to get into after that.

For all those who think I'm overreacting, go volunteer to work in a woman's shelter and see how many of these women's stories are sadly very similar to Dallas'; these women also loved their partners, they also used euphemisms to describe their abuse and they too thought at some point that the beatings were justified or acts of love.

Life in an MC is not always pretty...conflicted on my feelings about this one...

Ok...what to do what to say...I'm so conflicted! First let me say that I loved the first two books in the series and I think Kim Jones is a terrific writer and can spin an awesome tale, no doubt about that! My feelings are torn because of a particular scene in the book (which has already been spoiled in other reviews) and when I got to that point "I" was almost in tears with Dallas and for Dallas and became so enraged that the action went in the direction it did.
The book did start off with a bang...Dallas is being held captive in a hotel room by some masked men and then is subjected to the kind of torture you read about in military situations. We are left wondering WTH is going on and then the story takes you back to explain how she got to be in that position.
What I really DID like a lot about the book was how Dallas tried to fit in and figure out how to be the Prez's ole lady...the rules, the protocols, the politics...and when she gets it wrong it's almost funny and when she gets it right things really turned around for her.
The big issue in this story is trying to figure out if Dallas is now safe after all the Frankie drama or if someone is still contracted to kill her...and this becomes the main focus of the book alongside some club business which deals with disrespect and crossing territorial lines by another club.
For the most part I really liked this book (the sisterhood Dallas forms with Maddie and the other old ladies was fun and there was plenty of sexy time as well) but the torture scene in the prologue and another vicious and abusive chapter left me reeling and upset...not to the point of not reading the rest of the book, more to the point of cringing and tearing up.
If you read and loved the first two in the series you will definitely want to read this one to see how it all ends but be forwarned...it is not always pretty and the life in an MC is portrayed with grit and no holds barred honesty.
