This is my absolute favorite children's book, and give it to all of my new parent friends! The story is told in rhyme making the reading predictable for children. The illustrations are colorful and include "hidden" animals. And it's a wonderful, feel-good story! I only wish the author had written more stories about Maxi the Taxi Dog! (there are two other books)

I have given this book as a gift four times -- and each time it has quickly become the child's favorite book by far. A very smart little ten-month-old I know (and love) crawls over to the bookshelf and gets "Maxi Taxi" three to four times a day and hands it to you to read it to him. I can recite the book in my sleep at this point!! The rhymes are lovely; the illustrations are sweet and the message is just beautiful. I promise you that your young children will adore this book.

A "must read"

In the wonderful introduction (written by Steve Chandler) to this book he points out that author William Keiper "has caught lightning in a bottle". I couldn't agree more. This book is like riding a rail at 100 miles an hour. You can't stop and you can't get off and you don't want to. I love the whole idea that we have such amazing power that we only use when we are forced to use it in a crisis, but we can turn it around and be proactive. I will think differently about how I go after the things that are important to me. If you are stuck--buy this book. If you read it you can't stay stuck.

More Than Just a Great Read

The Power of Urgency is a powerful and thought provoking call to action towards getting what you want. I read it, studied it and then used it as a guide as I put my own system in place towards playing "all out" and saw immediate results. The beauty of the The Power of Urgency is that not only does it kick start you into action, but it also serves to help you get unstuck. It does both by providing great insights into the role that fear, inauthenticity, lack of commitment and not dealing with the truth play in our not having what we want. William's Urgency Rule # 17 states, "Proactive Urgency is personal. If pursued with clarity and commitment, it will transform your work, your life and the lives of those around you". In just ten days with this book, I see great evidence of this.

A motivating manifesto for getting your a$% in gear

A quick--but not at all superficial--read that gives you the tools and perspective to harness focused urgency in your life. A quote I particularly like: "The use of rational assumptions until they are proven false is a powerful tool to maintain direction and speed toward your objective." This is the kind of thinking that allows you to get into action almost immediately, without waiting for the full picture to take shape (which it almost never will anyway). In a way it's like the advice aspiring writers often get about getting started writing, which seems simplistic but is actually fundamental: start writing. It doesn't matter if you fumble at first--keep going. Only when you get writing/moving will all the latent ideas and possibilities around you start to take solid form so that you can actually grab hold of them. Until then they're just potential--you might be able to sense them but you can't put them to use. Keiper's book is geared toward helping you take those first steps--including doing some initial assessment of a situation--and then, once underway, adjusting course based on the feedback you get once in motion. It talks about making commitments, getting "first-mover advantage," the intuitive aspects of operating with urgency, and more. Keiper doesn't talk down to the reader, and he acknowledges that some readers may be familiar with some of the material here. But really I found the book uniquely inspiring, not only in content but because of the unique way in which Keiper's own passion and voice come through. For me one of the most inspiring things about the book is its motivational quality--you feel like getting to work after reading this, and more importantly you see how easy it can be to get started.

Great info, but....

This is the review I left on Working The Bench: A Practical Guide to Natural Botanical Perfumery. It's the companion book to the Essence Evaluation Workbook, I felt it fitting to leave the review as a set for each on each one's page.

First, let me just say there is some GREAT information in this book. Really and truly there is, and I'm appreciative of that.

However, I was terribly disappointed to see that the text on each page is printed very, very small. Add to that the fact that all the text on each page is enclosed in a rectangular box centered on the page, and the total amount of text would only take up approximately 1/3 of each page if this was actually formatted like a proper print book. As such, the actual length of the book would easily be only approximately 1/3 of what is listed in the description (210 pages). Of course that would change somewhat if the text were actually a larger and more readable size as well.

Even with the information that's here, I kind of feel like I've been ripped off. I was really expecting a nice, meaty book since it's listed at 210 pages... but that's just not the case. Had I realized this, I'd have never paid $32 for it. Well, I take that back. I probably would have, but if the book was formatted properly so that it's an easier read. I'd have at least known what I was getting and wouldn't feel like I do. I'd rather knowingly pay $32 for a 90 page book than to think I'm getting a 210 page book only to find out that the majority of each page is just white space.

The same is true with the Essence Evaluation Workbook that's a companion to this book... there's some good info at the beginning and the end (it is formatted like I'd consider a typical print book, so there was no issue in that regard), but essentially the entire book is comprised of nothing but sheets to use in evaluating essences, creating accords, etc. Yes, I understand this is for convenience, but again, had I realized that 95% of the book was simply blank evaluation forms, I'd have never purchased it. Even when viewing the "Look Inside" feature one would believe the majority of this book is actually text, and there's nothing in the description to lead one to believe that the majority of it is comprised of repeats of the same forms over and over again. Maybe I just expected too much.

I had high hopes for these two books as a companion set, but I kind of have a bad taste in my mouth simply because I feel a bit like I was ripped off. I respect Justine Crane's experience and appreciate very much that she took the time to write and publish this book in order to share her knowledge, but I honestly do wish she'd re-evaluate how it's formatted and remedy this issue.

I really feel torn and kind of just wish I could return them both.

Great for learning and cataloging essences

Absolutely fantastic forms for essence evaluation, accord building and perfume evaluations. I recommend photocopying and using in a binder. I would have appreciated an aromatic lexicon to help me get started with scent descriptors as well as perhaps a rudimentary listing of the essence families and typical perfume families. A simple list of typical top, middle, and base note aromatics would have been nice too. I like having this type of information close at hand while doing evaluations but I understand this is simply a workbook to accompany instruction.
These forms are excellent tools for learning the systematic process of perfume creation and I recommend to anyone.

Great book to assist in methodically of developing of a perfume. Provides evaluation and notation pages which can be photocopied and used hundreds of times. Nice workbook, but best for beginners.
