Pleasantly Surprised
By Amazon Customer
When I first started the series reading the preview of the book, I bought it but I was thinking it would not be really good. But it was a wonderful investment. I have truly enjoyed the storylines in both books. The author is did an excellent job with the characters In the second book I enjoyed Colin's storyline, I was able to understand him more. I always say it amazing how female writers do an excellent job with the male characters that we can understand their persona. I like Synthia too She's a little self absorbed but Mrs Hubbard keeps me excited the her storyline. I already have the 3rd book can't wait to see how this end. Will be reading more from Mrs Hubbard. Good job !!!!!

Poorly edited
By Reader4lyfe
I have read both books and thank goodness the first book was free because I'm a Prime member. The second book unfortunately I purchased. This heroine suppose to be very beautiful and kind. However, she is so selfish and self centered, she is ugly. She's angry with her mother for being mean to her and dislike her sister for getting the affection her mother did not give her. She refuses to tell her siblings that the mother is in the last stages of Alzheimer. She rather not allow them to visit her. She's infatuated with a man who has told her numerous times to leave him alone, but she continues to force herself into his life. She has a lot of mental problems and needs help. Additionally, these books are so poorly edited they are hard to read. I complained about this before with Amazon. The author is also engaging in a practice that I find appalling by writing a novella and classify the books as a series. So that the author can charge the reader up to $10-$12 dollars for a novel that would normally cost $6 dollars.

Amazon.com Review
We conceive of and describe the world in ways that usually work just fine, but in the far corners of the labyrinth of reason, our best intentions fold back on themselves, and we end up trapped in an intractable loop or tumbling down a chute of infinite regress. Labyrinths of Reason is a collection of classic philosophical thought experiments and other imponderables that push reason and language to their logical limits. Beyond just idle brainteasers, William Poundstone shows that these mental exercises have profound implications for such fields as cryptography, decision theory, subatomic physics, and computer programming. But most of all, they're good, clean philosophical fun!

From Publishers Weekly
"In a dazzling tour de force, Poundstone leads us through a series of paradoxes that move from Sherlock Holmes's puzzles to time travel, from dismembered brains in vats to multiple worlds, from the libraries of Atlantis to black holes. Eminently accessible, this delightful rapid-fire entertainment will appeal to readers of Douglas Hofstadter's G odel, Escher, Bach ," remarked PW . Illustrated.

There are limits to reason - get over it.
By Tom Blair
Good book. Rather technical can be a bit slow going. It covers almost exactly the same subject/issues I covered in an undergraduate class in formal logic at University of Pennsylvania in the 1970s. And that is one minor complaint - it is a bit dated.

What I especially like about this book however is that it is quite technical and yet covers the limits of formal logic, reason, and epistemology. Our society could use a good dose of the limits of the scientific method in an age when calling an opinion "scientific" puts it beyond question. "Science teaches" is a phrase too often used today to shut down inquiry, stigmatize doubt, and belittle intellectual opposition - and science (the epistemology of the scientific method) begins with doubt.

Read this book - so that you can understand that there are an infinite set of problems which are NP-complete (non-deterministic, polynomial time complete), that there are truths which are unprovable (formally undecidable), and just maybe to ask yourself if reason is a human invention rather than an attribute inherent in the universe.

Exercise your critical thinking skills
By Robert Johnston
The theory and concept of `knowledge' has been a lifelong curiosity. We seem to lack language to properly describe our minds ability to function with knowledge and fortunately we have folks like Poundstone to help us along. Poundstone walks the reader through what I view as his own considered process for acquiring the necessary, basic knowledge and applying logical constructs to broadly investigate what our minds are likely up to. Pay close attention to the seemingly basic and trivial examples ... "all crows are black". There are many assumptions in that declaration and perhaps, in the end, only you can conclude the fact or fiction within your tolerance for shades of grey. The body of knowledge certainly helps but in the end, after all avenues of logic are exhausted, you can never be certain. Only you possess the mental construct of your derivation. Poundstone's more complex and curious frailties in our assembling knowledge and applying logic are not new but profound and worthy of reading. The NP, NP-closed and P logic discussion was prescient when the book was written. Now it's Millenium Prize problem to prove that P is not equal to NP.

One reviewer calls out the epistemological nature of Labyrinth and indeed the theory of knowledge sums the book up well as a primer on the amorphous subject. The application of logic and critical thinking makes being human more tolerable. Poundstone reminds us that the process is so basic to everything that it deserves attention as standalone subject ... the `knowledge of knowledge' or the `philosophy of knowledge' so to speak.

Poundstone makes no attempt to make Labyrinths the be all, end all on the topic. I sensed the author himself struggling with his own examples and interpretations. Quite natural I suspect.

[FLAP COPY]

"What investment strategies have worked over the last 40 years? Ask this man."--Barron's

For many investors, the stock market is little more than a guessing game. The stock market bubble of the late 1990s had many investors convinced that the rules of the game had changed and that this time, it really was different. What Works on Wall Street, Third Edition--with all new data through 2003--shows that it's never different this time. Armed with earlier editions of this book, investors would have avoided the devastation visited on the high risk stocks that were the favorites of investors during the bubble.

What Works on Wall Street, Third Edition, takes the guesswork out of your investment decision-making. This in-depth, updated and data-driven book looks at key strategies and benchmarks that millions of investors rely on to make their investment decisions, and tells you which of these tools have provided investors with the best long-term results.

Acclaimed author and portfolio manager James P. O'Shaughnessy presents factual, unbiased and unexpected findings that prove you can do vastly better than the market simply by consistently using stock selection strategies that have withstood the test of time. Moreover, these five decades of results warn investors to steer clear of some popular investment strategies that are toxic to your wealth.

Expanded to include how various investment strategies perform when used on All Stocks, Large Stocks, Market Leaders and Small Stocks, this new edition of the book also covers all the new research O'Shaughnessy has conducted since the last edition.

Which investment strategies are winners--and which are losers? What factors most reliably indicate that a stock will rise or fall? Are value strategies better than growth? Do small capitalization stocks do better than large? What's the worst-case scenario for the various investment strategies and how long did it take for them to recover? Do these strategies work outside the United States?

What Works on Wall Street answers these questions and outlines a methodical, scientific, and results-based method for making intelligent stock market decisions. "To make the best investment plans for the future, investors need access to unbiased, long-term performance results," O'Shaughnessy writes. And that is exactly what he gives you in this history-making book.

James P. O'Shaughnessy is the Director of Systematic Equity for Bear Stearns Asset Management and a Senior Managing Director of the firm. O'Shaughnessy's investment strategies have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Investor's Business Daily, The Financial Times, London's Daily Mail, Japan's Nikkei Shimbun Daily, and many other publications worldwide, as well as on NBC's "Today Show," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," CNBC and CNN.

A popular book, valuable but flawed introduction to stock screening; consider paying for the current edition.
By Mark THOMPSON
A couple of reviews I read before purchase claimed that there was not much new material in the fourth edition compared to the third. Those reviews are not correct. There are a several new strategies tested and (somewhat) improved presentation of the data.

When the first edition came out it was a pioneering attempt to quantify various well-known trading strategies through backtesting. That was pretty valuable! Now, of course, everybody backtests their strategies before losing money on them. Still, this book is a good introduction to popular strategies (especially in the "value" realm), and an overview of what sort of things you can learn from backtesting.

It is also fair to point out that O'Shaughnessy is far from consistent in his testing, and his charts and graphs tend to make up in volume what they lack in clarity. In the end, if you are learning the art of stock screening, you likely want this book. But you should plan to learn a lot more than what you get here.

A Scientific Approach to Stock Selection
By N. Johnson
Investment books taut a number of filtering strategies to find profitable stock investments. This book provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't work. The method is systematic and scientific. The book contains a lots of data, but less analysis. It remains, nonetheless, a valuable work and belongs on the shelf of most serious investors.

The one significant weakness in O'Shaugnessy method is that it does not reflect the impact of a more complete trading system that includes money management and technically-based entry and exit poitns. The investment plan used to compare stock selection strategies is to run a stock filter annually and to rebalance the portfolio into the 10, 25 or 50 stocks in the screen on an equal weight basis. There are no stop loss orders, no position sizing based on volatility, and no trade timing based on whether the security is trending down or in a trading range.

O'Shaughnessy concludes that value-oriented factors (price-to-sales, price-to-book, price-to-cash flow, price-to-earnings, and dividend yield) are much more important to stock performance long term than growth factors (earnings growth rate, return on equity, etc.), except for relative strength. While this may be true using the annual rebalance approach under which O'Shaughnessy tested the stock selection strategies, it may not be true in a more complete investment/trading system that includes technical entry and exit points to ensure that the buyer does not pay too much for a given stock or run to much downside risk, position sizing and stop orders. I would like to see these results re-run in conjunction with a basic objective trading system that includes a money management component (i.e., stop loss, risk-based position sizing, etc.). It may be that value factors are vital to O'Shaughnessy selection strategy because they serve as a proxy for the missing money management and timing components of a complete trading system.

Despite this weakness, the book is a significant contribution to our understanding of which fundamental factors are most important to selecting less risky, more profitable investments for the long term. Recommended.

Statistical conclusions presented with more brevity in other books
By moneymanager
I bought this book because it was referred to in Ken Fisher's latest book and wanted to learn more about using statistical analysis to generate better returns in the market. The author does a great job of presenting his analyses and going through his rationale for why he carried them out the way he did. But whereas Fisher stressed doing statistical analysis with emphasis on generating trading tools to use in a forward looking fashion and to see which trading trends are useful under current market conditions, the author's analyses are performed looking back over decades of previous data with mainly a long term buy and hold strategy in mind. Consequently he arrives at simple value investing conclusions (ie, buy low P/E stocks, buy low P/S stocks, buy high E/P stocks, and avoid growth stocks with high P/Es). But again, in many cases he uses fairly long time periods for the analyses and assumes the use of a buy and hold strategy in which you can buy the stocks and then just let them sit in your portfolio whithout any worries for years to come. Also, he seems to like including the "tech wreck" disaster as an example of why overpriced growth stocks give poor returns to support his conclusions; again assuming you would buy tech stocks and then try to hold them for a long time even if they have a P/E of 200. Overall, gives good advice for people who don't want to do homework or trade often, but not of much value if you're an active trader and the idea of investing in low P/E stocks is presented better elsewhere.

A Man Called Ove: A Novel, by Fredrik Backman

Read the New York Times bestseller that has taken the world by storm!

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).

*Starred Review* At 59, Ove is a grumble Gus of the first degree. Rules are made to be followed, signs are meant to be obeyed, and don’t even get him started about computers and mobile phones. In truth, Ove has been this way his whole life, but he’s gotten worse in the last four years since his wife, Sonia, died, taking with her all the color in a world Ove sees as black-and-white. Ove has decided life without Sonia is not worth living and plans to join her in the next world. But a young couple and their two children (a third is on the way) move in next door, his oldest friend and most feared enemy is about to be forcibly removed to a nursing home, and a street-scarred cat insinuates itself into his life. Suddenly, Ove’s suicide plans get delayed as he helps solve neighborly crises large and small. Though Ove’s dark mission mitigates any treacly upstaging by animals and small children, readers seeking feel-good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. If there was an award for Most Charming Book of the Year, this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down. --Carol Haggas

Review
“A charming debut…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You’ll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything’s cuter.” (People)

“Even the most serious reader of fiction needs light relief, and for that afternoon when all you want is charm, this is the perfect book." (San Francisco Chronicle)

“You will laugh, you will cry, as his heartbreaking story unfolds through the diverse cast of characters that enter his life, all uninvited. You will never look at the grumpy people who come into your life in quite the same way. A very memorable read."
(San Diego Union Tribune, Best Books of 2015)

"An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks. A Man Called Ove is a perfect selection for book clubs. It's well written and replete with universal concerns. It lacks violence and profanity, is life-affirming and relationship-driven. The book is bittersweet, tender, often wickedly humorous and almost certain to elicit tears. I contentedly wept my way through a box of tissues when I first read the novel and again when I savored it for a second time.” (BookBrowse.com)

"A light hearted, deeply moving novel about a grumpy but loveable curmudgeon who finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door. This quirky debut is a thoughtful and charming exploration of the impact one life has on countless others—and an absolute delight." (CBS Local)

"A Man Called Ove is exquisite. The lyrical language is the confetti thrown liberally throughout this celebration-of-life story, adding sparkle and color to an already spectacular party. Backman's characters feel so authentic that readers will likely find analogues living in their own neighborhoods." (Shelf Awareness (starred review))

"Readers seeking feel-good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. If there was an award for 'Most Charming Book of the Year,' this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down." (Booklist, Starred Review)

“A funny crowd-pleaser that serves up laughs to accompany a thoughtful reflection on loss and love… The author writes with winning charm.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This charming debut novel by Backman should find a ready audience with English-language readers… hysterically funny… wry descriptions, excellent pacing… In the contest of Most Winning Combination, it would be hard to beat grumpy Ove and his hidden, generous heart.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Poignant and unpredictable, Backman’s book is filled with many twists and turns, as well as enjoyable characters and humorous situations." (Columbia Tribune (Missouri))

"There are characters who amuse us, and stories that touch us. But this character and his story do even more: A Man Called Ove makes us think about who we are and how we want to live our lives. A Man Called Ove seems deceptively simple at the start, yet Frederik Backman packs a lifetime's worth of hilarity and heartbreak into this novel. Even the most crusty curmudgeon will love Ove!" (Lois Leveen, author of Juliet's Nurse and The Secrets of Mary Bowser)

“One of the most moving novels I have read this year. I defy anyone to read this book and look at a quiet withdrawn person the same way ever again.” (Cayacosta Reviews)

What a blessing
By Barbara P. Phillips
My sister and I listened to this book from Audible and I am now reading his other book. Such a sweet, well written story of despair and hope.Having just lost a husband less than a year ago, I can certainly relate to his sorrow and feelings of worthlessness - being old and useless. What a blessing this book as been to me.

An amazing feel-good story
By Suncoast
This is a gem of a feel-good debut novel about A MAN CALLED OVE by Swedish author and blogger Fredrik Backman. It will make you laugh and make you cry and you will remember Ove for a long time.

Some would call Ove a curmudgeon, a lovely word meaning a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person. His wife called him the most inflexible man in the world - he borders on being obsessive compulsive but is generally a grumpy man who doesn't tolerate fools and likes things to be done that way he wants them. While many think that he is just a rude and grumpy man, at heart you will find out that he is one of the kindest persons you will ever know.

Ove is a 59 years old widower who has just been arbitrarily retired after 30 years in the same job. His world now revolves around his home and neighbourhood housing complex where he rules the roost making sure that all local rules and regulations are followed. He is very lonely since his wife died, he quarrelled with his best friend and neighbour years ago and rarely has contact with his neighbours.

Ove's world is one of anger and sadness. One day a new neighbour accidentally flattens Ove's mailbox driving in an area where vehicles are prohibited. This starts a very amusing, heartwarming and frequently very sad story as Ove's rigidly structured world is disrupted by unexpected friendship from Parvaneh, a vivacious small and very pregnant Iranian woman who has moved in next door with her Swedish husband Patrick and two girls. Parvaneh is perhaps the only person who can take on Ove directly and win, and starts to change his life for the better.

We also go back to how Ove met his vivacious and loving wife Sonja who was the direct opposite of Ove. At a critical time in her life she said to him "We can busy ourselves with living or dying, Ove. We have to move on." Now a widower Ove is struggling to move on.

This is one of the best feel-good stories I have read for some time and it gets a place in my best books for 2014. I strongly recommend it to someone who wants to read something different that will hit at your heart. If you are emotionally affected by books I strongly suggest keeping a box of tissues handy.

My thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for a copy of this book for review.

I absolutely loved this book
By Jo Kline Cebuhar
This was one of those accidental finds--meandering through book choices and came across it. I absolutely loved this book. It is funny, tender, thoughtful and thought-provoking. The character of Ove seemed a bit too curmudgeony at first, but as his story unfolded, it all fit. A touching perspective on loss and what it means to choose life and figure out one's new role as a loner. It also celebrates the importance of coincidence and embracing what life brings.
Laughed out loud and blubbered like a baby--what more can one ask of a book? Heartily recommend A Man Called Ove.

This is the first foray for any dictionary publisher in the U.S. into territory already covered by most of the major dictionary publishers. The new Merriam-WebsterESL dictionaryis similar in format to the Oxford ESL Dictionary (2004), with black-and-blue print—definitions in black, examples in blue. It is larger both in size and word count, with approximately 100,000 words and phrases. There are160,000 usage examples in addition to notes, drawings, and 16 pages of full-color art. British English definitions are included, but the emphasis is on American English, with a blue underline indicating 3,000 basic English words. The Merriam-Webster database of more than 100 million words was used to select words for inclusion,as were Internet sources, particularly the Lexis-Nexis database. The entries reflect current times, with definitions for chronic fatigue syndrome, crack baby, laptop, and the normal “informal offensive words.” Proper names are at a minimum (examples include Joe Blow, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Ponzi scheme), but there are special sections for geographical and common first names. Other useful sections for learners of the language are a grammar review, spelling rules, words that are often confused, prefixes and suffixes, word roots, and a handbook of style. A free e-book download to Mobipocket Reader is available to users, but the interface is not as user-friendly as that of other dictionary downloads. Although the ESL audience will be the primary user of this reference source, it also could be used as a current dictionary forEnglish-speaking students. Withits reasonable price, public libraries may want an additional copy for the circulating collection. --Christine Bulson

Merriam-Webster's at its best
By Holger Metzger
The list of Advanced Learner's dictionaries is as long as my arm: Oxford, Cambridge, Collins...---and now there's Merriam-Webster's. I guess it was about time: the market for this kind of thing is huge. It is not surprising that M-W finally wanted its share of the pie.
Well, M-W did not re-invent the concept: If you know the layout of one, you know them all: headwords are in bold, pronunciations are in the International Phonetic Alphabet, definitions come next, usually followed by one or two examples (in blue) to clarify the meaning of the word in question. Usage notes and illustrations are interspersed throughout the book. Like the Oxford Advanced Learner's, M-W highlights approx. 3000 basic English words as the most important words a learner needs to know. Also included in the book: 16 pages color art (again, most dictionaries have those), an English Grammar review, often confused words, spelling rules, a handbook of style (mostly punctuation, capitals and italics), weight and measures, e-mail and letter writing, etc.
The dictionary covers both British and American English. But the focus is definitely on the latter: in spelling and pronunciation, American is the norm (which is fine by me: it is an American Learner's, after all!). The definitions are written in a clear and simple language (as far as I can tell). Entries are up-to-date. Last but not least, a free eBook download is included (but not yet available as I'm writing this).
What is mssing is an accompanying version on CD. The online edition makes up for it, though.

But the nagging question remains whether there is a compelling reason to buy it... in all fairness NOT if you already have one of the latest Advanced Learner's available out there: Oxford is still the gold standard (a bit overrated I think), and Cambridge is getting better and better with each edition.
But make no mistake: M-W's Advanced Learner's is an excellent dictionary and a worthy addition to the Advanced Learner's Dictionaries market. It is quality throughout. If you are thinking about getting an ESL dictionary (especially if you want to focus on American English), you may want to give it a shot.

good for foreigners
By propella
This dictionary is better than Kindle's original one for foreigners because the definitions are easier and noun words show difference between [count] and [noncount]. I didn't find any other Kindle ready dictionaries to show the difference clearly.
For some reason, the sample had a strange layout but the real one was o.k.

Beyond Information: The Natural History of Intelligence, by Tom Stonier

Preamble The emergence of machine intelligence during the second half of the twentieth century is the most important development in the evolution of this planet since the origin of life two to three thousand million years ago. The emergence of machine intelligence within the matrix of human society is analogous to the emergence, three billion years ago, of complex, self-replicating molecules within the matrix of an energy-rich molecular soup - the first step in the evolution of life. The emergence of machine intelligence within a human social context has set into motion irreversible processes which will lead to an evolutionary discontinuity. Just as the emergence of "Life" represented a qualitatively different form of organisation of matter and energy, so will pure "Intelligence" represent a qualitatively different form of organisation of matter, energy and life. The emergence of machine intelligence presages the progression of the human species as we know it, into a form which, at present, we would not recognise as "human". As Forsyth and Naylor (1985) have pointed out: "Humanity has opened two Pandora's boxes at the same time, one labelled genetic engineering, the other labelled knowledge engineering. What we have let out is not entirely clear, but it is reasonable to hazard a guess that it contains the seeds of our successors".

I absolutely loved this game as a kid
By Jamaal
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I loved the music (especially for Prime Cup), the graphics, Gym Leader Castle, Kid's Club, and Free Battle. I wish there would someday be a Pokemon Stadium 3, but I'm not holding my breath...

Minimalistic
By Jack Giovanni
The guide never goes further than "This type beats this type", which anyone who has ever played pokemon after 1998 knows by common sense. it's useless, minimalistic, and only worth the money if you for some reason like to collect pokemon stadium guides.

This is a really great book!
By Mark Johnson
Before, I was stuck in the Poke Cup Master Ball stage and needed help to get past this psychic trainer. Grrrrr! No matter how hard I try, even if I use my mew from Gold, I can't get by this psychic trainer! His espeon beats me every time and he always always brings the espeon into battle with him! I got Mew from a Pokemon Gold and Silver mall tour my mom took me to and the super duper nice guy installed mew onto my Pokemon Gold cartidge for Game Boy and it is level 100 and I can beat almost any enemy I encounter except this aggravating psychic trainer! Grrrr! This book was the answer and it tells stats on all the trainers from all the cups including the new ones and it tells about the school and the lab and the mini games and that kind of stuff. It also tells about all the Pokemon and attacks. I don't like how you can't use items in the game and also your uploaded Pokemon don't gain experience on this game while battling. I also don't like that you can't use an uploaded Pokemon in the mini games. You have to play with the preset Pokemon for each game. Thanks a lot for this book! Now I'm finally past that grueling psychic trainer!

A wonderful series for girls 3+!
By Miranda and Genevieve
I am an 8.5 year old girl. My 6 year old sister and I love Daisy books! We have our own Kindles and look for fun-looking books on Cloud, like Owl Diaries or Wickedly Cool Witch or Junie B. Jones. When I downloaded Daisy And The Trouble With Sports Day, I loved it so much, I decided to see if there were more Daisy books on Cloud. I looked for a cute cover and a title beginning with "Daisy And The Trouble With" and then what it was Daisy had a trouble with. Then Daisy And The Trouble With Christmas popped up. I was so excited and downloaded it. This book was even better than the Sports Day book! One of the best parts was when a girl in Daisy's class almost wet herself. Then Daisy's hilarious and imaginative thought was "That's the trouble with Fiona Tucker. She drinks too much fruit juice at lunchtime." It was SUPER funny when all the girls (except one girl, who brought a plain baby doll) brought special extra-fancy baby dolls to school (to see if their doll would be picked as Jesus for the class Christmas play) and an annoying boy in Daisy's class brought some kind of action figure. Daisy and her BFF Gabby played a creative game where they had to think of something Christmassy that they loved. I loved that part, especially when Daisy's mom kept saying "I love Christmas carols!" and singing Christmas carols really loudly. That was SUPER funny. A funny part of the book was when Daisy wrote a Christmas list to Santa and one of the things on it was "A bike that fires torpedos". I would recommend this awesome book (and entire series) for girls ages 3 and up! :)

After being shipwrecked in Japan, adopted, and taught the Way of the Warrior at samurai school, Jack is ready to embark on the next chapter of his training: the Way of the Sword. His lessons involve fighting blindfolded, using a b-o staff, and finding messages in origami—all while withstanding the constant pressure of being a foreigner. The stakes are raised even higher when the school holds a contest. The winners will learn the great samurai Masamoto-sama's secret martial arts technique.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9 Bradford raises the stakes for his blond samurai student in this second installment in the series. Previously shipwrecked after his father was murdered by the ninja leader Dragon Eye, Jack is continuing his training as a samurai at his foster father's school for young warriors. Dedicated to keeping his father's navigational log from Dragon Eye, who has tried to steal it before, Jack hides the book at the castle of the daimyo, where he feels it will be safer. In the meantime, he must train to participate in the Circle of Three, a trial that would allow him to learn a double-sword-fighting technique, one he feels he needs to defend himself against the ninja's treachery. To add to his worries, his friend Akiko is acting strangely, disappearing in the night, and Jack suspects she may be training as a ninja. Bradford combines the structure of a British school story with the flavor of 17th-century Japan, and his descriptions of both swordplay and hand-to-hand martial arts reveal his extensive knowledge of the subject. Young martial artists will be eager to try out sticky-hands drills in their own dojos. Though the secondary cast is often too large to keep track of and only a few of the characters are fully developed, the ongoing struggle between honorable samurai and dastardly ninja will draw both reluctant readers and enthusiasts of Japanese history. From Booklist
In The Way of the Warrior (2009), shipwrecked Jack began his training as a samurai after watching the vile ninja Dokugan Ryu murder his father. In his second year of training, Jack perfects a few new techniques while dodging his adopted society’s increasing hostility toward foreigners. Bradford takes special care and pleasure in describing the minutiae of martial arts and other aspects of Japanese culture. With straightforward prose, he has managed to pen lively and exciting fight sequences and is slowly beginning to develop a keen edge to his cast of characters, laying significant groundwork for future installments. Grades 6-9. --Ian Chipman

Couldn't put it down
By Ashley Carter
I know this is a teen novel and I am going on 30, but this really sucked me in. LOL. Perhaps it is because I am a martial artist and have a thing for martial art related novels, but I found this to be well written. The plot, though fairly simple, has side plots, which I find quite nice. The main character faces many trials and tribulations in this book, a bit of bullying and typical teen angst. Oh, and of course, there is his arch-nemisis "Dragon Eye" who wants him dead (and he also wants to take something valuable Jack has)! I also like that it is an easy read so I can sort of zonk out and not have to really "focus" on what I am reading. I'd say it's worth a read if you are looking for a fantasy teen novel.

Exciting Japanese Adventure
By K. Quinlan
I teach high school and purchased this series for my classroom library. Since then, I've had to acquire another set of the books because they are so popular! My guys - including ESOL guys! - are tearing through this series awfully fast. The action in the books is fast-paced, the characters sympathetic, the lessons supplied in koans. I find the series highly entertaining myself (I've read them all as well), and broadly historically accurate. The author runs an accompanying website where fans can do puzzles and games related to the books. The series is quite violent, but not graphically so.

Would recommend for any classroom library.
Would recommend for active boys or girls, 12+

good action/adventure story set in samurai days
By M. Tanenbaum
British author Chris Bradford continues his action-packed saga of samurai and ninja in the second installment of The Young Samurai series: The Way of the Sword. Jack Fletcher, shipwrecked, orphaned by ninja pirates, and then adopted by a samurai in 17th century Japan, has completed his first year of samurai school. His problems are not over, however; his classmates still taunt him as a "gaijin" (barbarian foreigner), anti-Christian sentiment is spreading, and worse yet, the evil ninja Dragon Eye is still after Jack and his father's rutter, which contains the secret routes to navigate the world's oceans.

Once every three years, the samurai students have a chance to compete in the ancient ritual of the Circle of Three, testing their mind, body, and spirit. Those who pass this test will be allowed to learn Two Heavens, a secret martial art technique. Selection trials are held, and only the top five students progress to the Circle. Readers will not be surprised that Jack is among this elite group, as is his female friend, Akiko, and Kazuki, his arch-enemy at school. But will Jack be able to survive the competition?

I would not advise reading these books out of order; readers might be confused without the background from the first book in the series.

Highly recommended and fun action-packed story, great for fans of Japanese culture.
