Excellent resource for educators!

"Promoting Positive Racial Teacher Student Classroom Relationships" by Derrick Campbell is a great resource for anyone working in a school setting, especially teachers. I grew up in a town of 2,000 people, 99% were white. This book opened my eyes to what seems to be a growing problem of students (as well as teachers) of different races not being treated equally. I agree that servant leadership requires self-mastery before organizational achievement is possible. Further I agree that personal mastery is a process that will enable someone, a teacher in this case, to change strategies to the one appropriate and necessary to make it though the situation at hand. I think the Ethical Decision-Making Process looks like a fantastic resource. It asks many thought-provoking questions that I believe, if answered honestly, would lead a teacher to the best possible situation outcome. I am glad this book addressed substitute teachers who should also be informed of how these positive relationships can be improved and applied in the various classroom settings they will interact in as well. This is a great resource that I would encourage all teachers everywhere to read.

Good for Anyone in the Education Field

As a product of public schooling, I personally didn't see any problems with student-teacher relationships due to race. I know it exists from being a volunteer when my own children were in public school. I believe everyone from the cafeteria workers to the principal can benefit from "Promoting Positive Racial Teacher-Student Classroom Relationships".
Dr. Campbell's ability to use his own experiences is a great asset to helping the reader relate to what he is trying to accomplish. I applaud his efforts to get teachers to see that their efforts to work together to accomplish a positive environment rather than being uncooperative among each other is more beneficial to our educational system as well. If there are racial issues among the staff, there is certain to be even more among the students and in the teacher-student interactions.
I believe Dr. Campbell's book embraces much more than just racial issues among students and teachers and highly recommend it to parents as well as any educational staff member. Getting a different perspective on a situation is always beneficial.

Loved It!

We used this text for my Cultural Diversity course and I decided to keep it when the course ended. The articles are brief, interesting, and to the point. I found the one by Michael Moore really gave insight to his documentary experiences and why his life went the way that it did. I would have liked to see some information on weight discrimination, but this book really does what it should and makes some very important points.

Good information, but not particularly well written

I totally agree with the reviewer that said the sections tend to run together and aren't laid out real well. The information seems to come at you haphazardly. It reminds me of getting information second-hand from an aunt. One is always left wondering if she's remembering to explain it all.
I understood the Hay Diet before I read this book, and I think that may be a good thing. While the basic diet is shown in a single chart on page 12, it is so basic that I wonder if readers will understand. The really helpful chart is on page 98, which again breaks down the basic diet.
Chapters 2,3 and 4 are about using the diet to treat various ailments. While that may be true, I felt that the diet wasn't yet satisfactorily explained. Those chapters, it seems to me, should have been at the end of the book.
On the other hand, the book is chock-full of really practial advice for implementing the diet as a lifestyle. There are many menus, with an emphasis on creating your own menu ideas.
I suspect that I will refer to the book again and again as I search for more food ideas.

Jackie Habgood's book The Hay Diet Made Easy is just that--an easy to read and understand book on the theory and practice of William H. Hay's food combining diet. While there are other books available, this is perhaps the best for someone new to method, as well as those who suffer from various ailments to which our esteemed medical establishment often turns a blind eye. The only drawback to Ms. Habgood's work is the actual layout of the sections: these tend to run together without a definite sense of division. However, whether for reference (her charts are great) or inspiration or learning, this book is truly the only book one would need to purchase.

I LOVE this book!

I initially got Kathryn Marsden's little book on Food Combining which is a great beginner (explainer). This one goes into much more detail but still keeps everything so simple. Once you learn the premise, you can honestly create or adjust every recipe you already have and use. This book also gave information about medical conditions that respond favorably when we stop mixing all foods together at the same time. This information could help keep you out of the doctors office. My friend with diabetes is thriving on this program. You could honestly have more time, money and health to do what you really enjoy!

Leaves me wanting more

This series is very descriptive of daily life and believes of ancient Egyptians, raced through the first four and am anticipating all future entries. Can't wait to see what happens next, hope I don't have to wait too long to see what is in store for these wonderful characters, who are so strong yet vulnerable. If you love ancient Egyptian lore as I do, you won't be disappointed in this series.

Good introduction

I couldn't figure out whether to write "I will give a prize to whoever gets this right" or "I will give a prize to whomever gets this right." I decided to teach myself sentence diagramming because I kept getting confused by the objective case. (By the way, the first version is correct because "whoever" is the subject of the prepositional phrase even though the whole prepositional phrase is the direct object of the sentence--I think I'm saying that right. Whatever the proper descriptions, sentence diagramming makes the who-whom answer pretty clear.)

One thing to note: Reed and Kellogg, the folks who invented the predominant method of sentence diagramming, wrote their books before 1923. That means the books are no longer in copyright. So you can download the "Graded Exercises...," "Higher Lessons...," and "A Key Containing Diagrams..." all from Google Books. (The first two have exercises, the third has answers.) You need to try to match up the publications dates because there are several versions of each book. But this is a free way to get more detailed instruction than the rather short O'Brien book offers.

Still, I think the O'Brien book is a good starting point. You can use her book to get the knack for diagramming, then use the old books to fill in detail and supply extra exercises. (The older books are also fun because of the bizarre sentences you sometimes find: for example, "Since the breath contains poisonous carbonic acid, wise people ventilate their sleeping rooms.")

Very useful book.

If, like many people, you have struggled to learn the finer points of written English then this is a book which will be of great use to you. O'Brien manages to teach the basics of sentence diagramming in a quick and easy to understand way. The book is exercise based, using a combination of a brief description of what part of the diagram is being taught followed by a sentences to diagram. It has a good, easy to use, active contents page and is written in a clear and concise manner.

Personally I would have preferred more exercises to do, but those in the book are enough to teach you what you need to learn.

The sign of a true genius is making the complex, simple!

English grammar is just plain crazy! But somehow Elizabeth O'Brien has managed to make it simple.
Her systematic way of describing what each part of speech does, and seeing them in a diagram really makes it clear.
Each new lesson reviews definitions from the previous lesson which serves to consolidate the learning in a very effective way.
If you have been struggling to understand grammar, with all its incongruities, then this is the book that will make it crystal clear.
I highly recommend this book and have found it to be invaluable in my work.

A nice way to finish the series

I enjoyed these books, the first far more than the second, but overall was happy with the outcome. I think the secondary story of the pregnancy was a step to far as it became unbelievable when the fallout was minor. If the reaction equaled the trouble stirred with the storyline, it should have been expanded even further. And with less time on the already overplayed stolen child and missing family, that to me became boring and overplayed as it was mainly covered in the first novel. All in all a good solid book.

Now that you have met your biological family...

SPOILER: As much as I loved the first book in this series I have to say I was disappointed in this second book. My main objection is the unrealistic event of not only Lady Victoria Fitzwilliam being allowed to nurse and stay alone with Darcy in his injured and unconscious state but also the horrific sexual advances she made on his body while he was in that state. I don’t care if they were close and loving cousins or if the families allowed them time alone on many occasions; it is not acceptable behavior, not now, not then and not in JAFF, in my opinion.

This book tells the story of Elizabeth’s return to her biological family and her adjustment there. She does this while keeping ties with her “adopted” family. And they insist she keep her companion, her ladies’ maid and her dowry. I found the love and support, the visits, and the care given by the Duke, Avery, and Lady Sophia so gratifying. The Bennet family held no blame towards these important people in Lizzy’s life. But Lizzy finds her biological family as described in canon and even her relationship as her father’s favorite being reinstated makes no difference to Mr. Bennet when she points out his neglect in monitoring and disciplining his two younger silly daughters.

Mr. Collins shows up with expected results. Lady Catherine has no changes in speech or behaviors, just in location of such. Wickham is as always; again there is a brief interlude when he and Elizabeth seem to be friends as he pours out his troubles to her. Bingley: Bingley is even more tepid in his behaviors of showing up, paying attentions and leaving without an explanation. The soldiers’ presence and the Brighton adventure remain a part.

But at the center of our story is our dear couple, Darcy and Elizabeth. They have declared their feelings to each other at the end of Book 1 but he now stays away to give her time to adjust and find her footing in her “new family” and in her new position in society. They can’t write as there is nothing formal in their attachment so they get little news of each other. When he does set out to visit Hertfordshire…well, here I am not going to go any further. Events, people and circumstances turn against them. The misunderstanding between ODC is a new variation from Jane Austen’s P&P.

Much is taken from canon in this book. We read snippets and paragraphs of the same dialogue. Darcy and Elizabeth do get their HEA but it is not while strolling the lanes around Longbourn. I read this book in one day and was happy to learn the rest of the story. I just could have done without the event I mentioned in the first paragraph.

Everything did change

I have mixed feeling about this book. The premise was far fetched. Lizzy being kidnapped as a child and raised as a titled Lady was a stretch. Darcy figuring all of this out was even more of a stretch and what followed after the reveal was pure fantasy. My love of Lizzy and Darcy's romance has made my search for a good variation almost impossible to find. I wanted to find that spark, unfortunately, this variation did not come close to making me care.

This speed reading guide serves up tips and tricks to zip through reading while staying focused. Speed reading doesn't help if you don't remember anything!

The author does a nice job keeping the chapters short and has lots of practical pointers you can use to speed up your reading. I learned from reading this guide and you will to! Nicely Done!

Speed Reading is Great!

Speed reading has been a difficulty of mine and I am so happy I got this book to help me! The author has done a wonderful job with writing out all of the steps on how to speed read and how to skim read. This book is very well organized and all of the tips and strategies are straight to the point. After reading this book I now feel as if I can pick up a book and start reading it quickly and skim through the parts I don't need to fully read. This is a great book and I recommend it to everyone!
