As with so many other aspects of American slavery, achieving freedom carried far more variations than is widely known or understood. Journalist DeRamus follows up Forbidden Fruit (2005) with accounts of the myriad ways that slaves ran away. Her first section�reprises some of the love stories from her earlier book, telling of escapes by married couples who faced the threat of separation when one was freed and the other not. She recounts the case of Nelson Gant, a freed Virginia slave, whose offer to buy his wife was refused. Gant’s attempt to steal her resulted in a court trial that eventually upheld their marriage, the first case in Virginia to recognize a marriage involving�slaves. The second part of the book features stories of deceptions escaping slaves faced, including fake safe-house operators and tricksters who sometimes ensnared freed blacks. The final section is devoted to California, the destination for many escaped slaves though it had its own dubious policies, and to Mary Ellen Pleasant, a wealthy, powerful black woman who worked for the antislavery cause. --Vanessa Bush

A MASTERPIECE BY ALL MEANS!!!

FREEDOM BY ANY MEANS is an ingeniously crafted historical book BY ALL MEANS!!! I was more than intrigued to discover the other side of the story as it relates to African American history as I ventured into the world of the fifteen luminously untold stories uniquely documented by author Betty DeRamus.

I was instantly mesmerized with this book the moment I began reading the opening story of John Bowley, a skillful ship carpenter and freed slave, who daringly and cunningly showed up at a Maryland Slave auction in the mid-1800's with nothing more than some bold guts and a clever plan in a successful attempt to secure the freedom of his wife Kessiah (the niece of Harriet Tubman - The "Moses of Her People") and their two children who were all scheduled to be sold at auction to another slave-owner.

And I remained awestruck as I continued to read one untold historical event after another. And being a native of Tuskegee, Alabama, I was also intrigued with Tuskegee Institute's founder Booker T. Washington's description of the "grapevine telegram" - the invisible communication wire for slaves and freed blacks. Additionally, I was pleased to read an excerpt from a 1901 letter of Robert W. Taylor, financial secretary of Tuskegee Institute, to a newspaper editor concerning Harriet Tubman which reads, "She told me that when she found her mother unwilling to leave behind her feather bed tick, and her father his broad axe and other tools, she bundled up feather bed, broad axe, mother, father - all and landed them in Canada".

This expertly compiled masterpiece of "untold" historical events brings a whole new but most tasteful depiction to the accounts of African American freedom and history. As opposed to viewing slaves as a people who secured freedom through fear and avoidance, you now can appreciate an enduring account of slaves as strong people with a large vision who strategically and cleverly devised an effective and commendable plan of action for freedom. This took not only gutsy creativity but brilliant implementation.

And likewise, Author Betty DeRamus displays both gutsy creativity and brilliant implementation in her compilation of these remarkably documented untold stories. These intriguing pearls of history of American slavery should become integrated into the American history teaching curriculum of every educational facility. Needless to say, as author of "Freedom By Any means", DeRamus continues her excellence in documenting tales of African American history that she commendably started in her first book, "Forbidden Fruit".

This collection of historically accurate tales describes the many paths to freedom undertaken by black slaves through previously unheard of "Con Games, Voodoo Schemes, True Love and Law Suits on the Underground Railroad." They will strike you as clever, at times harrowing, and at other times flat out dangerous, but always full of heart, intelligence and love. The people in these historical renderings were guided by much more than the North Star. They were inspired by a deep and abiding faith in their humanity. No, these are not just stories of yesteryear, long ago days when slavery existed; these are not just stories to trot out righteously every February. These are stories to read for present-day guidance on how to escape the morass of war, poverty, hate, racism, and all the other isms that keep us isolated, insulated and thoroughly oblivious to our global kinship - except when our pocketbooks are empty and we are looking for someone to blame. Betty DeRamus masterfully wove these stories into one long proscription for modern times. They are a look back for a hope forward. Or should I say a hop? Or a row on the Ohio River, one of the routes of the Underground Railroad? Until this book I never knew Michigan, my home state, had such a progressive role in the Railroad. I'm not talking about Detroit. I'm talking about Cassopolis, Cass County, Michigan where one wouldn't ordinarily think of help for escapees from slavery. So these stories represent a portion of American history that every single person in this country needs to read as a path to understanding the heroism and heart of true patriots. These stories are well researched. DeRamus now has established a network of the families, white and black, whose ancestors played a role in the thumping of feet, the rustling of brush and the soft rippling of waves on the way to freedom.

"Freedom was supposed to taste like sweet potatoes simmered in cinnamon or pecan pies baptized with rum." However, former slave Sally Williams found the taste of actual freedom bittersweet at first. Like other people in Betty DeRamus's "Freedom by Any Means," though, Williams quickly embraced the life she and her son took extraordinary steps to create.

There are history books that spew facts. Then, there are history books that are written. With "Freedom by Any Means," journalist Betty DeRamus has written a factual book about stories from the Underground Railroad with an authentic, friendly, relevant voice.

Take for example, the beginning to Chapter Fourteen, "Let's pretend the academy of Motion Pictures was around in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, handing out shiny trophies to people on both sides of the antislavery movement..." This statement serves as an introduction to a chapter highlighting the acting and performance skills that often helped Blacks gain their freedom. There are quite a few examples like this in this book- where DeRamus uses timely, modern images to explain historical events.

Indeed, the narrator voice is engaging, guiding, instructive, yet unobtrusive. Challenging enough for scholars, but accessible enough for younger, or less seasoned audiences. Further, the author does not assume history is a bland subject for the classroom, or "historiophiles." Rather, this book includes quotes, poetry and even recipes. DeRamus uses several devices to share stories of the Underground Railroad with readers.

The stories and anecdotes contained in "Freedom by Any Means" travel ground that have not been adequately covered previously. And, happily, the work is equitable with regard to gender. In addition to males, who tend to be overrepresented in history, we learn about Tempe, a Missouri woman, who successfully sued for her freedom in court. And, we gain more insight into some of my favorites-- women like Mary Ellen Pleasant and the never too familiar Ms. Harriet Tubman. By the way, it isn't easy to teach me something new about Harriet Tubman.

I posit that when it comes to an oppressive, overarching institution such as slavery, there cannot truly be voluntary relationships between an oppressor, and the oppressed. Still, DeRamus' research offers an alternative to the standard, hostile, abusive and exploitative relationships that, more often than not, existed between Blacks and whites with stories about John L. Brown, and others. One of the best aspects of this book is that it can bear the weight of critical analysis and is worthy of inspiring intellectual and scholarly debate.

As a professor of Black Studies, what I appreciate most about this book is the profound attention to the seven principle areas of Black Studies. This text addresses history, politics, spirituality, psychology, sociology, economics, and creative production, as it relates to freedom. Indeed, the biggest problem with this text was not being able to identify a favorite section, because all the sections are significant, educational and contributory to the unfolding of Black Studies as a necessary academic discipline. The bibliography has been used intelligently, and enhances the text.

This book takes an important, urgent and needed step toward abolishing the myth of the "happy slave" and documenting our people's resistance. In a just world, a people would not have been held in inhumane bondage. But, if you want to know the many ways our people gained freedom, then, read this book!

Pilot-Philosopher laureate of France

Antoine de Saint-Exupery was one of the most interesting figures of 20th century literature. He wrote The Little Prince, a children's book that sold 200,000 copies in the U.S. alone in one year several years ago, and was also the author of several novels and memoirs, all relating to flying, of which this is one. The author was MIA over his beloved France while flying for the Free French Air Force in 1944 (after having to argue to be allowed to fly in combat; he was considered a national treasure). It appears the site of the wreck was discovered in the water just off the Riviera a couple of years ago, though no one's certain.
Wind, Sand and Stars is a recounting of several episodes in Saint-Exupery's life as a pilot, told to illustrate his view of the world, and especially his opinions of what makes life worth living, and who we are or should be. He was a wonderfully insightful individual, and his prose and ideas are the sort of thing you'll carry with you for years. I would highly recommend this book.

Aviator, Poet & Philosopher

Saint-Exupery disappeared in North Africa in 1943 while flying reconnaissance flights for the American forces. After reading Wind, Sand and Stars one has a sense that this writer/philosopher, who is probably most well known for his fable The Little Prince, was well prepared for his life to end in this way.
In the opening lines of the original French version Saint-Exupery writes:
"The earth teaches us more about ourselves than all the books.
Because it resists us. Man discovers himself when he measures
himself against the obstacle"

Wind, Sand and Stars is intensely autobiographical as it tells us of this man's adventures from his beginnings as a pilot with the air mail service over France, Spain and North Africa before World War I, through to his musings as an observer of the Spanish Civil War. But far more than an adventurer, Saint-Exupery writes like a poet and has the heart of a philosopher. This wonderful book (a credit to the translator from the original French) has incredibly rich descriptive passages in which he lays out for the reader the details observed in the natural world and the response that these evoke in his mind, heart and soul.
In one section of the book (which a reader familiar with The Little Prince cannot help but conclude was inspirational for that work) Saint-Exupery describes at length his near-death experience after crashing in the Libyan desert, and wandering for days without water or hope:
"Apart from your suffering, I have no regrets. All in all, it has been
a good life. If I got free of this I should start right in again. A man
cannot live a decent life in cities, and I need to feel myself live. I
am not thinking of aviation. The aeroplane is a means, not an end.
One doesn't risk one's life for a plane any more than a farmer ploughs
for the sake of the plough. But the aeroplane is a means of getting
away from towns and their book-keeping and coming to grips with
reality."

Wind, Sand and Stars is not an easy read. But for those with patience and an interest (in a phrase from The Little Prince) in "listening with the heart", here is an insight to one man's struggle to understand and articulate the sacredness and greatness of human life.

"The true face of the earth"

The essays and anecdotes in this volume are true gems to be enjoyed slowly, recalled fondly and shared often.
Despite the relative infancy of the aviation industry at the time he composed them, Saint-Ex clearly understood that flying - especially the type of long and dangerous kind that he was engaged in - was both a metaphor and a brilliant illumination into the nature of the human condition.
Like flying into uncharted territory, our journey through life is fraught with perils, faced mostly alone and with few witnesses to our acts of courage or cowardice. However, instead of facing up to this fact, Saint-Ex points out how "modern" culture consists of ever more elaborate denials of this basic fact: we have been indoctrinated with the goal of spending our lives working solely to achieve the most comfortable, painless, risk-free existence possible. And we continue to do so, much to our detriment.
These essays are skillful and evocative arguments that! ! only when we face up to, and acknowledge our tenuous and perilous existence, can we truly appreciate what it means to be alive. Saint-Ex does a wonderful job in writing about what has become important to him: experiencing the majestic beauty and power of the earth and nature, what the existentialists would call "being authentic", and the friendship and cameraderie of the pilots and people he has met on his journeys.

Happiness! It is useless to seek it elsewhere than in this warmth of human relations...

Moorad Choudhry is a vice-president in Structured Finance Services with JP Morgan Chase Bank in London. Prior to this he worked as a gilt-edged market maker and Treasury trader at ABN Amro Hoare Govett Sterling Bonds Limited, and as a sterling proprietary trader at Hambros Bank Limited. Moorad has lectured on the bond markets at the London School of Economics, the ISMA Centre in Reading, London Guildhall University and the International Faculty of Finance, and is a senior Fellow at the Centre for Mathematical Trading and Finance, CASS Business School, London. He is a Fellow of the Securities Institute and a Fellow of the Global Association of Risk Professionals. Moorad’s published work includes journal articles and books. He is also co-author of the book The Global Money Markets, written with Professor Frank Fabozzi. Moorad obtained an MA in Economics from the University of Reading and an MBA from Henley Management College. He is in the process of completing his PhD from Birkbeck, University of London. Very weak

Sorry to give this book a one star. But it is advertised by the publisher and the author as a tool for practitioners, not as a book to cram before the finals and then toss away for good.

The book reads like a collection of old academic papers without any connection to practical applications.

After using relatively advanced math, and going into unnecessary details of the old and useless academic theories, the applications is covered at a level of a introductory MBA class. You want a hedged steepener? Go ahead, "just match DV01, says the author. What about the fact the yield curves normally don't shift in parallel? That's where all those fancy models could come in to help construct a better hedge. The author's advice? He doesn't even mention the issue. What's the point of spending most of the book describing yield curve models that are never connected to even the most basic real problems?

A lot of comments are cryptic and poorly worded. You could match durations instead of DV01, says the book, but it doesn't work any better in practice. Huh?.. what's the difference? (There may be one, depending on the definition, but the author doesn't bother to explain.)

What about partial duration, principal components or any other standard yield curve modeling tools? Keep hoping. This is apparently not academic enough to mention.

Very, very disappointed.

Good for getting a feel of the subject

I work with Interest Rate Derivatives and I found this book an easy read.
This book will be particularly helpful to folks who are more interested in application part of it. I would say this is the kind of book I'll want my traders to read, if they want to understand the logic behind the models I make. This book will not teach them Stochastic Calculus or PDEs, but this will definitely give them everything they need to understand the logic - without exactly covering all the mathematical nitty-gritties. And if they want to know more, the book abounds in some very useful references. Has a few typos. But almost all of them are pretty obvious ones - so not much pain there.

All in all, I would say that at its price this book should certainly be in everyone's library.

Yield Curve modeling is on of the major subjects of fixed income, a subject of great power and benefits. As the author explains eloquently (page 56) that the yield curve is very easy to grasp the basics, but difficult to become expert at. It is linked by countless equation with vast underlying framework.
Despite its forbidding nature yield curve modeling is vital component of the fixed income market. It has wide range of applications and practical importance. However, the lack understanding so often encountered leaves students and market investors with a gap between able to use the theory and being able to do so. One way of promoting understanding and bridging this gap is the method this book follows. The way of this book is to make the reader understand the subject by providing detailed explanation with carefully selected examples, show how principles and concepts may be applied to particular problem. And then offering the reader examples that differ slightly but which can be tackled by an extension of the approach that have been used previously. All this is evident in chapter one. In chapter two the author selects well motivated examples to demonstrate specific principle and concepts.
The book starts with an overview of the concept of bond yields and bond yield measurement. It then discusses the basic terminology of the yield curve. The core topics of classical yield curve are then examined in chapter two. It includes brief introduction to each topic where important results are stated and sometimes derived or reference given, followed by a number of practical example worked out in detail. Part two of the book deals with the very practical topic of yield curve modeling.
One of the powerful features of this book is that it provides relationship between theory and market practice. To sum up, the author explains all the components of the yield curve modeling at the atomic level.

In 1934, a brilliant young scientist, Walter Kempner (1903-1997), was brought as a refugee from Nazi Germany to join the faculty of Duke Hospital s department of medicine. The first AMA presentation, in 1944, of his unconventional research in the origins and treatment of metabolic diseases provoked wide attention and considerable controversy, but the results of his strict diet regimen were undeniable. Patients flocking to Durham for the famous Rice Diet found their diabetes, kidney and cardiovascular diseases once considered fatal cured or greatly improved. The headline-grabbing success of Dr. Kempner's diet contributed significantly over the years to Durham's economic growth and Duke's transformation into a world-famous center for medical research and care. From his arrival at Duke, Kempner worked to help friends get out of Germany. For several who had been scholars in pre-war Germany he found positions here. They and a few others associated with the Rice Diet became a close-knit community in exile around the central figure of Dr. Kempner. One, author Barbara Newborg, worked with him for 40 years, much of that time as his chief medical associate. This first-hand account of Kempner's life and of his work comprises two dramatic interrelated narratives. The story of a charismatic but always controversial personality and his circle of accomplished followers, and their wartime experience as refugees and exiles, will interest general readers, including thousands of ''Ricers.'' For medical professionals and scholars, the book documents historic research that elucidated underlying principles of kidney, diabetic and cardiovascular disorders, and their successful treatment without drugs. The book includes many rare personal photographs (which Kempner suppressed during his life) and clinical images including graphs, x-rays, eye-grounds, and photos.

good if you want to know more about Dr. Kempner

If you want to know more biographical background on Dr. Kempner, this book will certainly shed some light for you. I had hoped to find more in-depth information about the research behind the rice diet, and there isn't as much in here as I thought there might be. Basically, it seems that in looking for a low sodium low protein solution for kidney disease and life-threatening hypertension (prior to the advent of antihypertensive meds), Dr. K. just pulled rice and fruit pretty much out of thin air because so much of the world's population has survived on rice. There doesn't seem to be much more history behind his choice than that. Or if there is, you won't find it in this book.

The book is comprised of three definite separate sections, although there is overlap and repetition among them. I would have preferred a book that traveled in a more solid time line, but the author and editor must have felt differently.

I did find some disturbing information about Dr. K. from reading this book, and it made me glad that I never met Dr. Kempner personally. I have worked with a lot of physicians, and most of them are real ego maniacs, so I wasn't totally surprised by that aspect of Dr. K. Yes, he was a caring man in many ways, but he was also very egocentric and a real control freak when it came to his rice diet. But what I found disturning was the revelation that he whipped patients for going off the diet! The author is okay with that because she states that either the patients themselves suggested it or pre-consented to it!!! It also disturbs me that Dr. K. evidently only used this technique with women! As a man who never married, and any reference to any sort of romantic attraction is entirely missing in this biographical account, this is just very disturbing information. No wonder Dr. K. held such a tight control over his rice diet plan, and felt no one could duplicate the study! Not when patients faced those sorts of shaming techniques!

There are some worthwhile reasons for reading this book, though, despite what respect I may have had for Dr. K. pretty much vanishing after reading this book. These are some worthwhile, informative excerpts.

"Kempner found that, in his experimental animals, he could produce very low blood sugar through fasting, in the absence of insulin and without causing convulsions. Relevant to the future development of the rice diet, he also found he could raise blood sugar levels with injections of adrenaline. Because the adrenal gland responds to sodium, its activity is decreased by the removal of sodium. These observations on sodium later bore fruit when they helped lead Dr. Kempner to the idea that sodium might play a role in both diabetes and hypertension via the adrenal glands and, more important, that maximum restriction of sodium could contribute to the treatment of these and other symptoms." (p. 44)

"As Dr. Kempner had pointed out to the medical students, his research had strongly indicated that a radical reduction of sodium, protein, and fat could halt or at least slow the disease process in patients with damaged kidneys. He had not imagined that, also in hypertensive patients with no evidence of kidney disease, the rice diet could actually reduce blood pressure, reverse heart failure, heal retinopathy, and, most astonishingly, significantly shrink disease-enlarged hearts." (p. 129)

"Another attempt to explain away the benefits of the rice diet was to attribute them to simple starvation. Dr. Kempner pointed out the 'fundamental chemical differences between the effects of starvation and of the rice diet... hemoglobin, red blood cells, calcium, and total protein, A/G ratio, sugar, carbohydrate tolerance, and CO2-combining power in the blood are decreased in starvation. On the rice diet, they are unchanged or increased. The blood non-protein nitrogen and urea nitrogen are increased in starvation. On the rice diet, they are decreased. Blood volume and interstitial fluid volume are unchanged or increased in starvation. On the rice diet they are decreased. The nitrogen balance is negative in starvation. On the rice diet, it is in equilibrium.' " (p. 156)

"Dr. Kempner ...found that hemoglobin and serum protein levels stayed constant, sometimes increased, on the strict rice diet, and that the high-carbohydrate diet provided calories sufficient to spare body protein. Moreover, he ascertained that the protein in rice supplied adequate amounts of essential amino acids and was particularly easily absorbed. The fact that nephrotic children treated with the rice diet grew healthfully provided additional evidence that the protein content of the rice diet was adequate." (p. 185)

"More fundamentally, thanks to his research, the essential roles of sodium, fat and cholesterol in a variety of diseases--although still not given their full due--are increasingly acknowledged in current medical practice. In a symposium honoring Dr. Kempner in 1974, one of his former associates pointed out the areas where Dr. Kempner's contributions become the basis of modern therapy: 'The restriction of sodium in the treatment of hypertension and cardiovascular renal disease is today, as a consequence of Kempner's research, standard practice.... [C]urrent recommendations state that "every effort should be made by the physician to control the symptomatic, maturity-onset diabetic with diet alone ... The principles established with this [rice diet] by Kempner's work, in extreme, now have been applied, in moderation, to all these medical problems. (Skyler 1974, p753)' " (p218)

"The pharmaceutical industry's success in winning over patients and physicians as well to drug treatment came not just from the force of its marketing but from cultural trends as well. Advertising and technology have created in our society the expectation of instant gratification with minimal effort. The rice diet, however, as Dr. Kempner repeatedly preached, requires commitment to a sustained effort, for which our tolerance seems to be nearly extinct. ... As multiple drug therapy has become the norm in treating patients with the multiple 'disease' sequelae of modern lifestyles, it has brought its own hazards with it. We read with distressing frequency of inadequate drug trials, under-reporting of side effects, unexpected drug interactions, and lack of oversight of drug administration. Moreover, it is too early to say what possible ill effects will be produced by the long-term use of potent chemicals." (p. 223)

Thankfully, the diet itself must be separated from the man who brought it into the world. I think there is more to the sodium key than even Dr. K. knew. Although the scientific evidence of how sodium triggers adrenaline is a real key puzzle piece for me personally that no one else has ever mentioned, and it was an almost-in-passing comment in Newborg's book.

Also thankfully, due to my persistent research into this area, I have found the other half of the puzzle piece---increasing potassium intake while simultaneously decreasing sodium is exactly the necessary information for better health for which I have searched for years. Dr. K was an advocate of the first half--restricting sodium. Richard D. Moore, M.D., Ph.D, author of The High Blood Pressure Solution: A Scientifically Proven Program for Preventing Strokes and Heart Disease, has brought the second half of the puzzle to light. Taking care of the sodium-potassium pump in every cell in our bodies is truly the key to health!

In the end, I am glad I read the book, mostly for the quotes I excerpted above. While the book wasn't quite as I expected it to be, and some of the biographical information about Dr. K. rather disturbing, I am glad I gave it a read.

If you are looking for biographical info on Dr. Kempner, this is definitely the book to read. If you are looking for more scientific information about the rice diet, this book might give you some vital information. If you are wanting to know how to improve your health in amazing ways, I suggest Dr. Moore's book, The High Blood Pressure Solution: A Scientifically Proven Program for Preventing Strokes and Heart Disease. And if you are simply interested in following the rice diet for weight loss and improved health, then I suggest bypassing all other rice diet books and just buying The Rice Diet Cookbook. It has good recipes, a full 3 week menu making the diet easier to begin and follow, and condenses everything you need to know about the rice diet and a few opening chapters. It is much recommended over any other rice diet books.

Scholarly and thoroughly

If you want to know full details about the man who developed the Rice Diet -- his life as well as the science behind the diet that has saved many lives since 1939 from kidney disease, obesity, and other ailments -- this is the book. It's written by the doctor who worked with him for forty years. It's not casual reading. While scholarly and detailed, it likely will appeal mostly to readers whose health has been improved by this revolutionary dietary regime and who want to know the full story of the man and the diet.

The white rice-diet to treat disease?

You learn about Kempner's life, some friends, family, mentors, and how lucky he was in getting to where he got. Certainly he was a gifted man, but as he had said without Otto Warburg, things probably would not have been successful for him. Under Warburg's excellent science, Kempner learned how to discover what is going on within the body, that the teaching of the time wasn't telling him. Through reading half of this book, I found out why he chose the rice diet to treat disease, and you get a glimpse into some of his and others observations in their scientific studies. Though I am only half way done with the book, I definitely would recommend it to any who wanted to understand his life and why his methods worked, and that his choice of the rice-diet wasn't an arbitrary guess, but through his medical training, a reasonable approach that opened up the door for more discovery. Though the book showed some of his personal flaws so far, it seemed to present him in to perfect a light. No footnotes to check to see if others thought of him in the same way, even though I have seen at least one MD interviewed online regarding W. Kempner, and it confirmed that the biography was telling us the truth, but would have liked more corroborating evidence to show that we were getting the real picture. It was also fascinating to see a little glimpse into Nazi Germany, and why by some Hitler was thought to have not lasted long. But Kempner's friend, and father figure Stefan George foresaw terrible times coming to Germany, and he died in 1931. It seemed like that if you were into politics, you would have known that Hitler was a very dangerous man, as usual most people were trying to survive in such difficult times that they probably didn't have the time to really do much of anything. As Churchill has said in his 6 volume work on WWII, that the war could be called the unnecessary war, it all could have been prevented if England did what they should have done early on. This goes to show us that political lies can bring a country down into the abyss.
