The original edition of this accessible and interdisciplinary textbook was the first to consider the ethical issues of digital media from a global perspective, introducing ethical theories from multiple cultures.
This second edition has been thoroughly updated to cover current research and scholarship, and recent developments and technological changes. It also benefits from extensively updated case-studies and pedagogical material, including examples of “watershed” events such as privacy policy developments on Facebook and Google+ in relation to ongoing changes in privacy law in the US, the EU, and Asia.
New for the second edition is a section on “citizen journalism” and its implications for traditional journalistic ethics. With a significantly updated section on the “ethical toolkit,” this book also introduces students to prevailing ethical theories and illustrates how they are applied to central issues such as privacy, copyright, pornography and violence, and the ethics of cross-cultural communication online.
Digital Media Ethics is student- and classroom-friendly: each topic and theory is interwoven throughout the volume with detailed sets of questions, additional resources, and suggestions for further research and writing. Together, these enable readers to foster careful reflection upon, writing about, and discussion of these issues and their possible resolutions.

Teachable and engaging
By Jill Walker Rettberg
We've used this and the previous edition of Charles Ess's textbook for several years now in a three week session of one of our first year undergraduate courses in Digital Culture at the University of Bergen. It's very teachable. Each of the six chapters raises issues that immediately make sense to students at the same time as Ess manages to draw in quite complex ethical theories and backgrounds that provide a starting point for rich classroom discussions. I particularly appreciate the cross-cultural discussions that help open students minds to the idea that the ethics of privacy, copyright, democracy, games and sex can be seen in very different ways both within a culture and in different cultures. The book comes with assignments and discussion questions that can be adapted for classroom discussions or home assignments. The book has worked well both for lecturers who've taught the topic previously and for new lecturers who have not previously taught this particular aspect of digital culture. We'll be using the book again.

Very clear introductionto the topics.
By Soraj
If you teach media ethics, this will be a book for you. Ess deals with a wide variety of topics in the field and his strong point is his emphasis on the intercultural aspect of the issue. This book will be useful not only for students but researchers who look for a starting point and an introduction to the bibliography of the field will be amply rewarded too.

The writing is quite dense and packed with information, but the writing style is so dry that it is difficult to read at times.
