After the collapse of the Roman Empire, however, outward-looking house forms replaced the ancient form in most of Europe and the New World.

In the Middle Ages houses served both as homes and as places of work, but gradually the domestic and business lives of the inhabitants became separate. In the wake of the Industrial Revolution, profound changes in the residential development of the western world occurred: housing became segregated along socioeconomic lines and dwelling types polarized, with low-density, single-family houses at one extreme, and tall, high-density, multifamily tenements and apartments at the other. Great floor plans

Huge amount of information and visual detail. Great floor plans. Some unfortunate language about non-Western, non-modern cultures. And this is not a picture book--the text is very informative but also mandatory because the drawings are labeled in the original language for types of room and the terms are only defined in the text.

Fascinating!

This fascinating book presents the history of housing from huts to neo-traditional buildings of the 1990's. Though the architectural point of view dominates, there are ample references to anthropology, sociology and general history. The author's passion and intimate knowledge of the topic transpire throughout.

The work is generously illustrated, entirely with the author's own sketches. In particular, it is chock-full with floor plans of the buildings discussed, what makes it even more interesting.

Though often more descriptive than analytical, this book is highly recommended to anyone interested in the evolution of our built environment.

A passionate work

You don't need a lot of background in architecture to appreciate this wonderful book. Professor Schoenauer, who was emeritus professor of architecture at McGill University until his death in 2001, takes us on a guided tour of a huge number of different housing styles over a great expanse of time and in highly varied cultural contexts. He really makes you feel as if he has personally inspected all of the places he describes (though it hardly seems possible that anyone could have) and he does this without overburdening his reader with too many technical terms or requiring us to have a very profound understanding of why houses stand up. Perhaps what really makes the book alive is the author's own drawings--something like more than 500 line drawings of floor plans, cross-sections, elevation views, city plans, etc, etc, etc.

The book is divided into three major sections: The Pre-Urban House, the Oriental Urban House, and the Occidental Urban House. The first section divides housing into types by socio-economic/cultural organization which the author suggests is more or less evolutionary (though these types may be found simultaneously though distributed in space). The second section examines a very long span of time (but including in some cases the present) with detailed discussions of typical house designs in various periods in Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, and Islamic cultures. The final section is an historical treatment of developments in the West: the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the 19th century, and the 20th century are all treated in turn.

Now something about the style of the book. At first, I was a bit distracted by Professor Shoenauer's digressions on culture, anthropology, historical sidelights, etc., but after a bit I started looking forward to these as much as learning about the buildings themselves. Admittedly, he doesn't always use the most recent or varied sources for his historical treatments (for instance, his sections on the dissolution of the Roman Empire could, in my opinion, be improved). And yet, by buying this book you are obviously reading someone's life work--and life passion--someone who is really overflowing with ideas, committment, scholarship, and who has an incredibly detailed and varied knowledge of his subject.

A great read, and a very uplifting story.

This is a heart warming story of true love, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Emmalyn finds herself in the northern reaches of Minnesota and Wisconsin far away from the man she loves, because he committed a crime and is doing the time.

This is a wonderful, wonderful story told with skill and will a lot of heart.

** Spoilers Follow **

The story takes place in the last two years of Greg's sentence. While Emmalyn makes the best of things, she has some adventures with local characters that both challenge and expand her compassion.

When the book begins, the reader is most uncertain about the future of Emmalyn's and Greg's marriage, but by the time we reach Chapter 30, we both know, accept, and are gladdened by the fact that they do get together.

Thomas Aquinas said that someone who has never doubted the existence of God doesn't believe in God. If Emmalyn had never questioned her marriage to Greg while he was in prison then I'm not sure the reader could have accepted that their love was real.

Ms. Ruchti, the author, did a skillful job of weaving the realities of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota into the book. She used local flavor with foods, sayings, and insightful descriptions of the countryside to make you feel as though you were there.

While she not pummel anyone with it, it is clear that Ms. Ruchti comes from a religious background in a very positive way. That positive aspect shines through as a ray of hope and love in the book.

All in all, a great read, and a very uplifting story.

Another winner from Abingdon Press

Cynthia Ruchti is another author whose work I consider myself blessed to have encountered via the “Vine for All” category of “Christian Books”. Her deeply insightful and beautifully written novel “As Waters Gone By”, published by Abingdon Press, is another winner from that amazing publishing house. Although it is my policy NOT to check on reviews by others before writing my own, I will not be surprised to discover that this one has received so many accolades mine will be merely icing on the cake.

Of the numerous things that made this an extremely meaningful read for me, perhaps the most significant is the description of the conflict resulting from Max’s incarceration and Emmalyn’s ambivalent response to it. As it happens, over the past 30 years or so, my husband Ray has had a ministry of ongoing correspondence with a large number of inmates. He has visited several of them during their time of imprisonment; had telephone communication with some of them; and in several circumstances maintained contact after their release to various parole or probation situations. Therefore I am absolutely able to verify the authenticity of Ruchti’s description of the difficulty in communicating under those conditions, which forms such an important plot element in this novel.

Although this book is deeply imbued with a genuine spirit of love, faith and hope, it is at no point saccharine or clich�. All of the characters are vibrant and realistic, in a decisively off-beat sort of way. The discussion of Emmalyn’s own resentment of her mother's and sisters’ attitudes as they impact her own feelings and actions offers a powerful counterbalance and additional infusion of realism. In all, I’m very glad that the paucity of meaningful offerings on my Vine Queue led me to seek out this book.

As Waters Gone By -- Something to Savor and Not to Rush Through

Have you ever read a book you didn't want to end because you knew when you read the last page you'd have to say "goodbye" to characters you'd come to see as friends and the setting you'd come to wish you could live in or, at the very least ,visit? That's how As Waters Gone By affected me. I could have read the story faster, I suppose, but I took my time, wanting to savor every moment.

Ever since I first learned of Madeline Island, the only island in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore that is inhabited, I've wanted to visit there and write my own story set in that wonderful unique place. Seeing the island through Cynthia Ruchti's beautiful descriptions hasn't changed that feeling one bit. Located across a wide channel from Bayfield, Wisconsin in the western end of Lake Superior, the island is the northernmost point of Wisconsin and just about the furthest point from my hometown located in the southeastern point of the state.

Ruchti's characterizations are top notch and so much on point that even if a character doesn't have their own Point of View, you feel like you know them deeply. I fell in love with all of them. As the story carries the reader through the emotional and spiritual arc of the main character, Emmalyn, you come to know her and what has formed her to be the woman she is at the first page and what she's become on the last page.

The author's descriptive style makes this writer's heart dance with joy. Like one of the book's endorsers, I found myself highlighting some of the phrases that grabbed me. Phrases like "An ooze of light woke her" or "Tears she repressed scalded her eyes on their way out." A very small sample what's in store for you when you open the book for the first time.

I highly recommend this book. But don't try to rush through it. Enjoy it like a tasting the world's finest chocolate and let it linger awhile on the tongue before swallowing. I've no doubt I will one day read this book again. It's that good.

I was gifted with this book by a friend and did not purchase it. But if I hadn't received it that way, I would have bought it.

How can you live out your faith without truly understanding it? The study of Christian doctrine is often considered the domain of professional Christian scholars. After all, what does doctrine have to do with the average layperson? And what does the history of what Christians believe have to do with how we should live today? John Hannah asserts that an understanding of theology-“the distilled knowledge of God that is the foundation of a walk with God”-is essential for living the Christian life. “No one can walk with a person he or she does not know,” he states. “Neither can we say we walk with God if we do not have an accurate knowledge of Him.” This book is not a collection of dry and dusty theories, nor a debate about the hair-splitting minutia that so often divides us. Instead, it is an exploration and explanation of the essential truths of the Christian faith-truths that determine how we live our lives every day. It is a call to the church to again have God our number one priority. Why Theology Matters Often Christians do not know what they believe or why they believe it. About the Author
DR. JOHN D. HANNAH is the Distinguished Professor of Historical theology and Research Professor of Theological Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas. He holds a B.S. degree from Philadelphia College of Bible, an M.A. degree from Southern Methodist University, Th.M. and Th.D. degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary, a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas and received a Post-doctoral fellowship in American Studies at Yale University, New Haven, CT. Dr. Hannah has written extensively for journals including Bibliotheca Sacra, Front Lines, Fundamentalist Journal, Discipleship Journal, Modern Reformation, and Trinity Journal. His books include The Glory of God Alone (Presbyterian and Reformed Publishing Co.) and The Pictorial Guide to Church History, The Kregel Guide to Ancient Church History, The Kregel Guide to Medieval Church History, and The Kregel Guide to Reformation Church History (Kregel Publications). He has also published three volumes of charts (Diagrams and Charts of Ancient-Medieval history, Reformation and Post Reformation History, and Modern and Post Modern Church History) with Zondervan. Dr. Hannah is a frequent conference and church speaker both in the United States and abroad.

It's Great!

Use this with my band and choir classes. It really helps tone production and quality! The guys in the video are total nerds about it, too, which makes it way more fun for the kids. The exercises really help demonstrate what I've been asking for daily!

IF YOU WANT TO IMPROVE AS A WND PLAYER, GET THIS BOOK!!

Patrick Sherdan and Sam Piafian have proven to be inovators in music education and this book/CD combo is the pinacle of their work. Use the exercises everyday and incorporate the routines into your daily practice and the results will be incredible.
