Not your average mixology book!

Your average cocktail/bartender book is usually just the result of somebody gathering together as many recipes as they can find, prefacing it with the obligatory "how to stock your home bar" chapter, then selecting "File / Print..." Is it any wonder then that people these days are confused as to what a Martini really is?
Thankfully, Gary Regan has shown us that a mixology book can be far more then we have come to expect.
In "The Joy of Mixology", Gary lays out for us the results of what obviously has been many years of research into what cocktails really are, and how to make them properly. First he covers the common topics such as history, bartending, garnishes, glassware, but with far more interesting information then you most likely have seen elsewhere. Mr. Regan then dives into laying out the various styles of cocktails and mixed drinks, and how to understand them in ways that focus on the proper and well-balanced construction of each style. There is a lot of meat in how he organizes his lists, and a wealth of information behind their proper construction.
Cocktails really don't need to be as confusing as they seem to be to most people. This book goes a long way in not only making sense of the large array of cocktail selections available, but also in bringing to light the potentials of a "Quality" cocktail experience.

This is THE BOOK

I'm surprised that this book doesn't have more reviews - I am usually too preoccupied or lazy to take the time to write Amazon reviews, but in this case I had to speak! This really is THE BOOK if you're looking to learn the art of mixology, the craft of the cocktail, the joy of boozing it up in a delicious and debonair way! I am rather obsessive with the whole mixing drinks thing - and an obsessive buyer of cocktail books - but the only two that really matter - the only two that are ESSENTIAL and not just a novelty to own - are this book and Dale Degroff's the Craft of the Cocktail. Buy others if you have the inclination, but if you're wondering what to buy to learn, or to enjoy, or to be able to say you have the definitive books on the subject - buy those two. And believe me, I've tried out enough of the recipes to KNOW what I'm talking about!

Now I am almost in love of this book

I bought this book almost a month back and done reading the entire book. Now I am almost in love of this book. The information given in this book is so amazing. Apart from the recipes provided, I am fond of the information provided and the health content too. The font is nice, bold. The Author 'Dr. Aparna' has done a great job of explaining minute details about your body and the connection to mind through the channel of ancient Indian healing practice. The photos provided are in context and very informative. I also liked the various quizzes provided in this book. You will find them everywhere. The quizzes keeps you engaged with the book in a very interactive manner. The recipes provided are simple, effective and very healthy. I have tried almost 5 recipes since then and I am liking the satisfaction and the health benefit I get from it. The Author has done a great job and finding the right balance between the aesthetics and the content of the book. I am looking forward to read more from Dr. Aparna.

Putting together the picks of the decade, old and ancient food recipe is a painful process, not least due to the number of items or variables involved but due to gap and lots of misunderstanding concepts towards old ancient century food cooking. This have given birth to negligence towards health which forced people to switch over to today’s what so called “Grab & Go” type.

Ancient food cooking and dietary slowly steadily vanished due to growing ignorance of people and inclination towards junk food.
Author Dr. Aparna Pattewar has done tremendous meticulous work of gathering those entire ancient food cooking methods under one roof in this book. When I read this book it reminded me of my mother and now I understand why my mother forced me to eat the food that she cooked and always had me to void other.

This book is not simply one more book about cooking food, but it also explains human anatomy and what type of food should into our system which in return ensures a healthy life.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is health conscious and believes in Prevention is better than cure, as this book is medicine while enjoying delicious food at the same time.

A nice suite of Wools work

This is a nice suite of prints which deal with Wools obliteration painting technique. While the majority are in Black and White, there are some startling colour examples here too, which give the viewer a bit more in terms of Wools style. If your looking for an overview of his work, then I suggest getting hold of that retrospective catalogue published years ago. The design of this book has some good and bad points about it. The good thing is that the printing is fantastic, and the images are huge ( at least A3 in size )...but the down size is that it's a big, skinny, floppy thing to lug around!

A Much Needed Organizational Update On the Original Manuscript

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Since this book is really just an updated and much better edited and organized edition of the original manuscript, I am including most of my original review of the first manuscript as it is still relevant to this edition. However, I would like to emphatically state that this edition is a much needed update on the original that was in dire need of editing and a much more concise and organized layout of text and photographs, which this edition does splendidly and really takes it to a whole other level with the addition of color photographs.

DISCLAIMER

Well I guess I should start off this review by first informing you, the reader of this review, that I proudly hold the coveted distinction of being the very first Krav Maga instructor personally certified by Boaz Aviram, the author of this book and the producer of his seven disc DVD series. That not withstanding, I assure you that my being one of his students holds no bearing whatsoever on my review, as a matter of fact, I am probably more critical of it than I would be if I did not hold this position. So with that being said, on with the review.

REVIEW

The main criteria that I judge a technique based book upon is the quality and quantity of information that is provided and how relevant it is in relation to the subject matter it is purporting to be providing. In other words if a book is telling me it is the next best thing to sliced bread concerning Krav Maga, then it darn well better deliver upon its promise. And in this particular instance, it does just that.

Boaz provides a wealth of information concerning the principles and philosophy of Krav Maga as taught to the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) soldiers in a curriculum designed to teach them how to effectively use Krav Maga on the battlefield in as little as 21 hours of instruction with some soldiers receiving an additional 8 to 12 hours of instruction depending upon their individual units needs. Now of course this material must be practiced correctly and as many times as it takes before becoming instinctive in nature in order for it to reach its true potential in both effectiveness and efficiency. It is plainly obvious that the person that practices the techniques correctly for say two weeks is not going to be anywhere near as good as the individual that has practiced for years.

I have always believed and often stated that the principles and concepts behind a technique are far more important than the technique itself and that is something that you will find throughout this entire book, although you will find an abundance of technique never forget that which is more important. This is something that even the great military genius Sun Tzu expounds upon in his famous writing, The Art of War, which follows this very same philosophy of principles and concepts being of more importance than actual techniques.

This book contains a lot of information on a wide array of topics from basic striking and kicking, to defenses against a variety of attacks ranging from unarmed attacks, to chokes and holds, knife and gun attacks, and pretty much everything in between. This book should also be used in conjunction with Boaz's DVD set entitled, Pure Krav Maga - Self Defense Mastery, which is also available here on Amazon.

Now do I agree with absolutely everything in this book? Of course not! And those things that I don't agree with are more of a technique based issue and not the more important issue pertaining to the various principles and concepts. An earlier book that is I believe one of the first to showcase Krav Maga and one that the author also appeared in is called, Fighting Fit.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning Krav Maga as it was, and I presume still is, taught to the IDF in Israel.

Imi's successor Eli Evikzar passed the Krav Maga legacy directly to one Boaz Aviram. So today, only one expert can truly claim that he was there from the very beginning. Boaz Aviram is without a shadow of doubt the third generation in lineage of true Krav Maga mastery.

Boaz Aviram's new book, is a systematic presentation of all the original Krav Maga (now coined as Pure Krav Maga) techniques. Each technique is explained and taught true to the spirit of Krav Maga - honest, straight to the point, efficient More importantly the main Krav Maga CONCEPTS (eg Pre-emptive Strike) behind the techniques are also imparted.

The important points of each step are explained - like re-positioning, body weight shifting, strength sources and much more are generously shared. In this book, basic principles were always emphasized; a vital element which I believe is missing in many other books or classes.

Following through the book is akin to having Boaz Aviram himself in front of you - the grandmaster's sincere character emanates through as each move is clearly demonstrated though a master and student relationship.

The book is a true window into the world of Krav Maga, a rich culmination of skills and knowledge of three generations of masters (from Imi, to Eli and through Boaz). It's an indispensible learning tool for anyone who is interested in Krav Maga... PURE Krav Maga.

The Gold Standard for Krav Maga and Self-Defense Manuals

The excellent first edition of this book was self-published by Master Sergeant Boaz Aviram who was 3rd in line as Chief Instructor of the Israeli Defense Force Fighting Fitness Academy. This new edition published by Skyhorse Publishing is even better! The grammatical and typographical errors have all been corrected, and the photographs are now larger and in color. This encyclopedic work lays out clearly for the reader the highly efficient method used by the Israeli Defense Force to train its soldiers in Krav Maga (or Close Combat). This is the single most comprehensive and in-depth treatise on modern hand-to-hand combat ever available. If one is looking for a single text to explain both the mindset required to survive a violent encounter AND the techniques necessary to triumph over one's adversary, look no further. This book has set not just a standard to be met but THE Gold Standard for martial arts and self-defense manuals. Well done MSG Aviram!

Waste of money.

This reads like the work of an ingenu�. Many so-called clich�s are simply technical language which the author doesn't seem to understand. There is a long history of nonsense-talking in football; theres more than enough material to fill an entertaining, informative and interesting book. Sadly, this is not that book. It's a terribly sliced miskick in front of an open goal.
